You have been warned

I just passed exam 70-480. I wanted to wait until after I took the test to review this book. First off, believe the other reviews who say this book is full of errors: it is. I didn't believe it could be so bad, but it is. There are also lots of type-o's and grammar mistakes. It's like this was rushed to print with absolutely no editing or proof reading. The only good thing I have to say about this book is: once I realized how many errors there were, I double-checked everything myself to make sure what the book said was (or wasn't) accurate and that helped me learn the material better. As far as learning the subject matter, you are better off with the Training Guide. As far as prepping for the test, you are better off with the Transcender and/or Measure Up practice tests. If you only rely on this book to pass the exam, I can pretty much guarantee that you will not pass. I'm going for other MCSD exams next and the reviews of other Microsoft Press books are even worse than this one, so I will not be purchasing any more Microsoft Press books; I've learned my lesson.

Left Me More Confused Than When I Started

The only good thing about the book is it goes through the exam objectives and has sample questions for each objective. There's also a "critical thinking" section at the end of chapters which makes the reader try to write the code for the exam objectives which they just read. However, the examples used for exam objectives aren't fully written and leaves the reader lost sometimes trying to figure out how things work. I've had to refer to W3C and Mozilla many, many times to figure out how JavaScript methods are supposed to work. I plan on taking the exam, but if I relied totally on this book then I'd fail with flying colors.

WARNING - WARNING - WARNING!!!!

I'm currently 85% of the way through reading this book in preparation for the exam. I must say, this is an absolutely sloppy pile of crap! It is full of errors. As an exam preparation book, you would think that the question and answers would be well written, and correct. Obviously no one at the publisher bothered to proofread the questions and answers, or even test them. Several questions are missing from the answers section or numbered incorrectly. Dozens of the questions and answers have errors in them meaning that in some cases, there isn't an actual correct answer. And, once you've answered them and mark yourself, you'll be confused, because the answers are just plain WRONG!

If you buy this book, you are guaranteed to get frustrated and confused.

The content itself, is not bad. Another month, polishing, proofreading and testing would've made a big difference to the quality of this book. As it stands, it's a big disappointment!

Deprecated!

iOS and OS X audio are done differently and the bulk of the examples work on OS X only. HAL methods (the methods with "Hardware" in their names) have been deprecated. I learned a lot from this book. Note to Chris Adamson, time for a new updated edition - this could be the definitive text.

Clearing away the fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

I've been working with AudioQueue microphone input (IOS) for over a year, but found myself avoiding anything deeper (properties, listener callback notifications, metering, audio units, ...). After running through this tutorial, I now understand what is going on under the hood, and have moved down into working directly with audio units.

For me the most useful tips were:

1) Simple CheckError() logic to decrypt the 4 character mode and error code constants used throughout.

2) Clear explanation of file formats, audio formats, converters, and native PCM representations on IOS and OSX.

3) Pointers for where to find CoreAudio documentation (much of it can be found only in header file comments)

4) Clear pattern for required lifecycle sequence of constructing an audio units graph of nodes, which must be defined before open, opened before starting to set properties, and properties setup before initialize.

5) Reusable patterns for the sometimes awkward pointer arithmetic required to assemble AudioBufferLists on the fly.

6) Unkinking the awkward syntax of Output units, which are used for both hardware output and hardware input. Both the outbound bus #0 and inbound bus #1 have input and output scopes, which relate to where the unit fits into the graph. Clear description of threading, buffering, and clocking issues which must be handled in OSX context which may include multiple external audio accessories from different vendors, with different clocking and timing. After completing this tutorial I now "get it".

7) Clear description of the differences between OSX and IOS implementations.

8) The quick intro to OpenAL and Midi were interesting, and enough for me to understand how these work, though they aren't part of what I do.

Overall this book was a great help to me. I highly recommend it to anyone already experienced with OSX or IOS development, but wanting to dig deeper into audio. Not much audio background is required (the first chapters cover the basics), though you will need to be comfortable with working almost entirely in C with nary an NS* in sight. Even the file I/O operations use CoreFoundation (not Foundation) methods. If you are looking for a higher level interface, you may want to explore the AVFoundation or MediaPLayer frameworks, which are nicely documented in Xcode docs, but are not covered by this lower level tutorial.

At last a book on Core Audio, and a good one!

First let's start with stating how satisfied I am of having found that this book exists. Core audio is one of the most difficult programming topic I ever found, because of the subject matter and because of arcane, not very well documented, obscure and often inconsistent Api conventions and naming. OpenGl is difficult as it requires loads of mathematics, but is wery well documented. Core Audio is as difficult as OpenGL, mayebe more, but knowledge about it is much harder to be found.

The authors take their time to tell their readers what this book is not, it is not a book for wannabe programmers, it is not a beginners guide, beginners and less than determined programmers, please look elswhere. Audio is not for everybody, it involves doing computations in real time and is an order of magnitude more difficult than say, Ruby web based design.

A prerequisite for a beginner's book on Audio on Mac OsX and iOS, is being a rather advanced programmer in all three major languages required by the platform: Objective C, C (on which Core audio is based) and C++ (because of OpenAl 3d audio). You should be proficient enough to be familiar with structs, pointers and memory allocation.
The approach of the authors is keeping the UI side to a bare minimum, as UI is not what this book is all about: on the Mac side this choice implies having to deal with command line programs, and ignoring the Cocoa side of things. As this book is centered on Audio programming this choice is very logical. On the iOS chapter, a barebone simple View controller is used (as iOS does not support CLI.).
Learning Core Audio explains how to use all the major audio engines available on Apple platforms, which are basic Core Audio services, Core audio queues, Audio units and Open Al.
Differences between the iOS and Mac approach is detailed in the 10th chapter, after the Mac platform has been explained.
What you won't find in this book: this is not a complete treatment of the matter, which would have been simply impossible, but is rather gentle (as gentle as possible, not too much) introduction to as much as possible of the main aspects of the matter. The authors do attempt to let the reader acquire a full view on the general phylosophy, unwritten conventions and way of thinking necessary in order to deal with the frameworks, enabling the reader to go on and research further on his or her own after reading this book. The authors do manage to render Core audio understandable and practically approachable by determined and cabable programmers, and out of the restricted circle of �ber-Hackers and programming demi-gods. At least a book on Core Audio for us normal humans, the authors seem to discourage casual potential readers by stating how difficult Core Audio is, well I do believe the subject is difficult, but they did an excellent job in making it practically understandable.

How to build a complete commercial Audio Unit is not dealt with, nor is in any way treated the required knowledge of electronic music principles and digital signal processing. These subjects require separate reading of the typical well known and usually large tomes on the subject (e.g. Boulanger, Openheim-Shafer).

I cannot but recommend this book as required reading on the matter of Core Audio programming.
Personally I would have liked to see at least an introductory chapter on DSP and some coverage of Audio Unit development, but these subjects were obviously either too complex or not completely related to Core Audio learning, for which this book is THE starting point.
I am also very grateful to the publisher, for the courage shown in publishing a book which will not be of interest for a very large audience, but which was nonetheless desperately needed.

Great therapy tool . . .

Awesome for supporting clients experiencing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, adhd, axis 2 struggles, dual diagnosis counseling and as a start with depression. I bring this book into session, and most clients really like it. Very popular. As with any guide there is a certain amount of tailoring activities to each individual, and making tweaks here and there, overall a really impressive guide and base to mindfulness work. I like to use this a lot in support of CBT work and practice, as an introduction to therapy, as well as an ongoing support.

After each exercise I use client feedback, during process time, to make minor improvements to certain exercises that need a tweak here and there. It's worth it to purchase.the paperback, due to the necessity of making copies and handouts for colleagues and clients alike. Great book to share with other therapists in the workplace too!!

handy, useful, straightforward, not new-agey

This book gives clear instructions for introducing and practicing a mindfulness program with others. It even offers ways to simply explain how mindfulness affects the brain. Research shows that many people with stress and/or mental health problems can benefit from midfulness execises. This book helps clinicians offer the opportunity to experience mindfulness to others and encourages clinicians to practice their own program of mindfulness regularly.

Can't print worksheets from Kindle. Here's how to get them

This is a lovely book which I would give five stars but for the difficulty I had in getting printable copies of the worksheets with the Kindle version.

I wrote Amazon customer service. The response was, in part, "Due to publishers restrictions you cannot get reproducible forms for these books as these books are in Kindle format. Amazon is just a seller platform for these books, the best person who can help you get these forms is the publisher of these books."
I was surprised at how little help Amazon offered. Customer service did not even provide contact information for the publisher.

The publisher was much more helpful. The rep told me to do a search in the Kindle book for "download." That will take you to a link to their site. Once there you can establish an account and download the forms. It works.

Some good ideas

There are some real eye opening ideas that are worth developing further. Unfortunately, the topic is so broad that greater detail could not be given to each strategy. Perhaps the author will develop each strategy in its own book. I would have given a 4 star rating but chose not to because of the multiple over attempts to promote a newsletter. This book is certainly worth the price paid and time spent reading it.

University of Virginia psychology professor Hetherington and writer Kelly offer a "primer" on the "postnuclear family experience." After studying more than 1,400 families and 2,500 children over three decades, Hetherington sees divorce as part of a series of "interconnected transitions" in life rather than a one-time event. While destructive in the short-term, divorce can also be positive, creating new opportunities for long-term personal growth. The authors begin by looking at the character of the marital relationship, which is like a bank account: each partner makes "deposits" of strengthening factors (like mutual support and intimacy) and "withdrawals" that debilitate the relationship. The emotional base of the marriage erodes if there's an imbalance of "deposits" and "withdrawals" for too long, resulting in divorce. Depending on their "protective" factors (maturity, autonomy) vs. "risk" (impulsiveness, antisociability), ex-partners will weather the stormy first year after divorce with varying degrees of resilience. After six years, most are happier. While the general picture is fairly positive, the detail can be unnerving. Children may be adjusting, but after six years, a quarter of them see their noncustodial father once a year or less. One fourth of ex-spouses are still having conflicts after six years. Most stepfathers give up the struggle to connect with resisting stepchildren after two years. With these darker realities in mind, the authors offer a series of practical suggestions at the end of each chapter. But its scholarly bent (aimed at its primary audience of upper-level college students and counseling professionals) and its claim to be "the most comprehensive study of divorce in America" may turn off some.

No Agenda, Except the Truth

This was a most helpful, elucidating book. It maps out what life after divorce is like, on the basis of an enormous, scientific study. Anyone who has been divorced, or is the child of divorced parents (or marrying one) will find in it all the touchstones you need to know about to help you guide your emotional life.
After all the political fighting about divorce, here is a book with no agenda, except the truth. Indispensible.

Just the facts ma'am. The first truly helpful book I've ever read on the subject. This book allowed me to look at divorce from a different, more productive perspective. The fact that it is backed up with solid research gave me the confidence to trust that I have the power to control where I go from here... a message that I'm trying very hard to instill in my children too.
