About the Author

Joseph Baker is Professor and Head of the Lifespan Health and Performance Laboratory at York University, Canada. He has also held Visiting Researcher/Professor positions in the UK, Australia and Germany. His research examines the varying factors affecting skill acquisition and maintenance across the lifespan. Joe is Past President of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology and the author/editor of 8 books, 4 journal special issues and more than 200 peer reviewed articles and book chapters

Stephen Cobley is a Senior Lecturer in Motor Control and Skill Acquisition and Sport and Exercise Psychology in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney, Australia. His research interests examine the factors that facilitate or inhibit athlete development from a bio-ecological and multi-disciplinary perspective. His research and applied work has led to the evaluation, modification and writing of athlete development programs and policy for numerous sport organizations. Scott Freeman

Scott Freeman received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington and was subsequently awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution at Princeton University. His current research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning and he recently published two papers on his work: (1) how active learning and peer teaching techniques increase student learning and improve performance in introductory biology (Freeman, S., E. O’Connor, J.W. Parks, M. Cunningham, D. Hurley, D. Haak, C. Dirks, and M.P. Wenderoth. 2007. Prescribed active learning increases performance in introductory biology. CBE—Life Sciences Education 6: 132-139.); and (2) how the levels of exam questions vary among introductory biology courses, standardized post-graduate entrance exams, and professional school courses (Zheng, A.Y., J.K. Lawhorn, T. Lumley, and S. Freeman. 2007. Applications of Bloom’s Taxonomy Debunks the “MCAT Myth.” Science 25 January 2008: 414—415).

Kim Quillin

Illustrator, Kim Quillin, combines expertise in biology and information design to create lucid visual representations of biological principles. She received her B.A. in Biology at Oberlin College and her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley (as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow), and has taught undergraduate biology at both schools. Excellent Book (but don't buy the accompanying study guide)

I just took BIO 180 at the University of Washington for which this book was required. I have to say that although this was an expensive book, it is more than worth the money dropped. You can use it for all of the introductory Biology courses (180, 200, 220) and it's also a great book for satisfying personal curiosities about other topics in biology.

The best part about this book is that it is impeccably organized and thorough. You will not get lost in dry, confusing blocks of text and there are chapter summaries which are great to include in your notes. I used the book extensively for the course that I took. As I continue through the series I will definitely hold onto this book.

One quick note: the study guide is virtually a repetition of the chapter summaries and was not that helpful, so don't waste money on that. :o)

Used it for Introductory Biology - UW Seattle

Great book. Really enjoyed it. For a science textbook, it's not that "word-y." I actually had the Professor who is the author, and how he teaches is kind of like what this book does: it seeks to clarify, not muddle; brevity and concise for maximum understanding. Also has great illustrations. I wouldn't completely rely on only this textbook to learn everything about Biology, but this is a great start.

Also for future UW students: No, I did not have to buy MasteringBiology. That was completely optional. Clickers were more important than MasteringBiology. MasteringBiology is not Alex/Connect Plus.

I love this text!

I've only been using this book for 2 weeks and I already enjoy it, which is a big thing to say for a textbook. The last general bio book I had was full of information that drowned out the overall point each section within the chapter was trying to bring. It was full of biochem and technical talk that wasn't needed for this level of class.

Freeman's book brings a refreshing approach to writing about biology. Each chapter and section within each chapter, provides the student with the "meat and bones" of what they need to know. It's not hard to comprehend the take home message and to see how each little component adds up to make a larger component. This book has made me love biology again and understand why I returned to school. Good job Scott Freeman!

Loved it! *Spoiler free review*

I received this book in exchange for an honest review and I just have to say that I loved it! I was in a book slump for the past few months but finally found a book that lifted my spirits. Just from the prologue I knew I was going to like the spunkiness of the heroine and throughout the rest of the story I liked her more and more. For the hero, initially I wasn't sure if I would like him lol but as the story progressed and you come to understand him, you can't help but root for him too. I actually liked how the author did that and there is no insta-love which I appreciate. I always like stories where relationships have to build and develop and it becomes stronger that way. The heroine and hero are definitely a fitting and fun pair. This book also has a beautiful complexity and strong character development which I always look forward to, like you're going on a journey with the characters. The interaction of the supporting characters too was great. I kind of wish there was another book from the other characters' pov's. Though this book is written in a high school setting and I've been out of school for a little while, I still found the characters relatable and the story highly enjoyable. If you're looking for a book with a cute romance, a touch of humor, and very likeable and growth in characters, this one's for you. Looking forward to more works from this author :)

Funny, Amazing, Cute, but mostly importantly it is REAL and RELATABLE. It is authentic (and I may have completely fallen for Ashton and his pickup lines...figuratively fallen in love of course... is it getting hot in here?) Joddie Zeng has done an outstanding job with this book. It is a book that I could read again and again and again (and again). Trust me! It is definitely worth reading. I really really hope that the author makes sequels and more books and stories and never stops writing because she has the potential to be a bestseller in no time!

This book is amazing. Personally, I love it when high school stereotypes are washed away and this embodied that perfectly. The main character, Ariella, is supposed to be the stereotypical nerd/not caring about anything other than her one goal, to get into Columbia. She is the girl that nobody really notices or care to notice because she has dull clothing on rather than the revealing "sexy" clothes that other girls have. She hates how much girls care about their appearance and how much they care about other people's opinion because she really could not care less. So you might be thinking what makes this book stand out from all of the other books that talk about the nerd realizing that popular jocks are not that bad and that she might be in love with one of them? Well it is the whole concept of the popularity project. A girl who is barely noticed at her school has to become a part of the popular crew in a completely new environment (how cool is this idea?). When you read it you feel like you want to be the main character because her character is funny and awesome. Also, the sense of humor in this book is quite something. The pick-up lines mentioned in the book is amazing, boys should take tips from this one. Anyways I think this is an amazing read and one that i highly recommend

As a 2nd year PhD student someone lent me this book so that I could acquaint myself with Social Psychology (which I had very little exposure to beforehand). I felt that I had a better grasp of social psychology after reading this book than I did after taking a year of PhD level courses. Ross & Nisbett effortlessly cover the foundational works of Social Psy in a way that is immediately accessible and compelling. This is one of two books that I recommend to incoming PhD students...

Taking account of the importance of the situation

This book is a wonderful introduction to the importance of situational influences on our inferences and decisions. The coverage of examples is thorough and it is easy to see how each is relevent to the topic at hand. Written in a an imminently understandable and conversational style, this book is a pleasure to read. I particularly enjoyed the ways in which the authors demonstrated the types of faulty logic we all use when trying to use dispositional information to make predictions about the behaviour of ourselves and others. This book points out quite clearly that just because an approach appears to work in the real world, doesn't mean that the rational for using it is reasonable. An enjoyable and informative read!

This is an excellent introduction and review of the field of social psychology, its research and its applications.
