A complete crime that this book doesn't have thousands of 5-star reviews...

...but that seems to be the way of both publishing and music, a field whose difficulty in achieving success has a place in this stunningly woven story. As both a musician and a writer, and someone fascinated by the brain as I am by love and family, this book satisfies on every level. It's gorgeously written, the prose breathtaking (so rare) and gracefully unfurls story that is at once inspiring, compelling, heartbreaking. Why this book is selling for 91 cents is beyond me, but it pains me. Stanley reveres Didion's Year of Magical Thinking, but i found this a million times more readable. It's both accessible and deeply artistic, full of depth; her MFA in creative writing was well spent. I can't put it down.

Beautifully written and fully formed.

The undeniable strength of Kara Stanley's "horses" expertly pull the reader through her memoir of a life forever changed in 2008 when her husband, Simon, suffers a serious head and spinal cord injury. With charming readability and honest emotion, Stanley shows how the struggles of rehabilitation affect the family, and how friends, hope, music, and creativity helped them to renegotiate the terms of daily life. This book is a testament to love that will keep you engrossed from start to finish.

Moments in time.

Disclaimer: the author is my sister! In all honesty though I can highly recommend this. I saw this story unfolding, participated in it, but to hear it in Kara's words to learn the incredible love story that preceded Simon's accident was amazing. Her writing is clear, moving, and inspirational. The story scares me with the fragility of life, but inspires me with our resilience and the power of love. It also inspires me to value each moment in time.
