Some good ideas

There are some real eye opening ideas that are worth developing further. Unfortunately, the topic is so broad that greater detail could not be given to each strategy. Perhaps the author will develop each strategy in its own book. I would have given a 4 star rating but chose not to because of the multiple over attempts to promote a newsletter. This book is certainly worth the price paid and time spent reading it.

University of Virginia psychology professor Hetherington and writer Kelly offer a "primer" on the "postnuclear family experience." After studying more than 1,400 families and 2,500 children over three decades, Hetherington sees divorce as part of a series of "interconnected transitions" in life rather than a one-time event. While destructive in the short-term, divorce can also be positive, creating new opportunities for long-term personal growth. The authors begin by looking at the character of the marital relationship, which is like a bank account: each partner makes "deposits" of strengthening factors (like mutual support and intimacy) and "withdrawals" that debilitate the relationship. The emotional base of the marriage erodes if there's an imbalance of "deposits" and "withdrawals" for too long, resulting in divorce. Depending on their "protective" factors (maturity, autonomy) vs. "risk" (impulsiveness, antisociability), ex-partners will weather the stormy first year after divorce with varying degrees of resilience. After six years, most are happier. While the general picture is fairly positive, the detail can be unnerving. Children may be adjusting, but after six years, a quarter of them see their noncustodial father once a year or less. One fourth of ex-spouses are still having conflicts after six years. Most stepfathers give up the struggle to connect with resisting stepchildren after two years. With these darker realities in mind, the authors offer a series of practical suggestions at the end of each chapter. But its scholarly bent (aimed at its primary audience of upper-level college students and counseling professionals) and its claim to be "the most comprehensive study of divorce in America" may turn off some.

This was a most helpful, elucidating book. It maps out what life after divorce is like, on the basis of an enormous, scientific study. Anyone who has been divorced, or is the child of divorced parents (or marrying one) will find in it all the touchstones you need to know about to help you guide your emotional life.
After all the political fighting about divorce, here is a book with no agenda, except the truth. Indispensible.

Just the facts ma'am. The first truly helpful book I've ever read on the subject. This book allowed me to look at divorce from a different, more productive perspective. Creative and exciting short fiction...

When I first came across this book in it's initial paperback printing, I was excited by his blend of outrageous humor and insightful prose. Especially hilarious is the story about two friends, one of whom plays with things for a living. He looks for the "intrinsic ludic value" of ordinary household items, or rather, would they make good toys. He had one relationship end because of the natural similarities between the shape of a flying saucer and the shape of a birth control pill dispenser. On a whole, it reminded me of Raymond Carver but without the suicidal tendencies. More mature (but not as funny) as his wonderful first novel _The Mysteries of Pittsburgh_, I am looking forward to his next volume of short fiction as it seems to me that the short story is his true gift.

Great characters...not too happy

I must say, I'm a huge Michael Chabon fan. His books are always filled with dynamic characters in fascinating situations, and A Model World is no different. But where some of his books have a more airy feel, the stories in this collection are dark. the underlying theme to almost every story in this colelction is family breakdown. the worlds in Chabon's book are certainly not the model that anyone would like to follow.
That being said, the writing is as strong as ever and the stories are engaging. From the dark, satirical humour of the first story, to the tense nail-chewing fear in the last, Chabon takes us on a ride.
Chabon is a writer who, in a rare case, is actually living up to his hype. Read A Model World; it's worth it.

The Lost World

Michael Chabon is about as good a short story writer that you are going to find today. This is unfair because he is also America's best new novelist. Nobody has any business writing novels and short stories equally well. This is Chabon's first collection of short stories and it is not quite as good as his subsequent collection, Werewolves in Their Youth, but it is still excellent.
The book is divided in halves - A Model World and The Lost World. Ultimately, the second half of the book is better because it is a series of connected stories about Nathan Shapiro, a boy growing up and dealing with divorce.
If anyone is interested in the craft of short story writing, A Model World is a model collection.

The first 100 pages ROCK!!

There is a sentence in 'Think and Grow Rich' where Napoleon Hill gives the REAL secret of success. It's only one sentence, and if the reader isn't paying close attention, he will miss it. Napoleon Hill is talking about having a plan to accumulate money, and he writes:-- "a definite plan through which you intend to EXCHANGE services or merchandise in return for the money you are visualizing."

The key word in that sentence is: EXCHANGE.

In the first hundred pages of 'The Closer's Survival Guide', Grant Cardone has really opened my eyes about the word "exchange". What Grant teaches is that "exchange" is what the close is all about!

It's been said that even if you get one idea out of a book, reading it has been worthwhile. The first 100 pages of Grant's book has absolutely changed my paradigm, and I have been involved in hardcore, straight commission sales for a long time. Infact, as of this writing, I have had the book for less than a week, and I have already read the first 100 pages over again three times! FANTASTIC!!

As far as the actual closes in the book, if you've been in sales for a long time you've probably heard a variation of these, but DO YOU USE THEM?

I have added 'The Closer's Survival Guide' to my list of favorite sales books (which are 'The Closers' by Ben Gay and 'You Can't Teach A Kid To Ride A Bike At A Seminar' by David Sandler)

Again, the first 100 pages is worth the price of the book!

I can't believe I requested to cancel my order for this book

Probably the only time in my life that I am happy a vendor ignored my request. I've been in sales for 10+ years and have a substantial library of sales books and many more that I have read with the aid of a library. I have had ups and downs in my sales career results-wise but never really could get consistent good months ever because of some disconnects I was having with really understanding in this area no matter how many books I have read. This is hands down the best book I have ever read on the most important area of the sales process and have put it in my top 5 of MUST HAVE sales books with purchasing the audio program that compliments the book highly recommended. It is that good. I read a review somewhere on Amazon that someone said this book was just all high pressure. Well, it's not high pressure if you have asked and investigated to figure out and the buyer has indicated what he/she wants and have built a solution based on the buyer's feedback. If you have done this, you have earned the right to be enthusiastic and insistent, as the author puts it, on the buyer owning what you put together for them. After all, they told you they wanted it. Just a fantastic piece of work.

I have bought this book twice. That should be enough actually right there to let you know how I feel about this material. The first copy I bought grew legs and walked off from a dealership where I used to work. So, when the black Friday special rolled aound I bought the book And the CDs. The CDs have been lent out and only some returned as Everyone that gets a taste of this wants to be able to use them to make money. This is about reasoning with people, overcoming objections, presenting everything in a positive light and CLOSING. It goes along wit hthe statement, "You drive for show and put for dough." Grant reminds us in this book that 20% of our actions make for 100% of our income. In other words, you can know everything about a product, have the absolute best customer service, and even have the prettiest smile out of every other sales consultant, but if you cannot close... you make $0. Period. I bring this book with me to work everyday and take it home every night. If you want to get serious about your lifestyle and your income... Get this book, it's Gold!
