I was so excited to read this one after Lemon Tart, and I was not disappointed! Great story line, mystery, a little romance, funny lines, and recipes. Who could ask for a better book?

English Trifle is the second of the Sadie Hoffmiller mysteries, but since I won a copy of it, I got to read it first. I found English Trifle completely absorbing! I devoured this book. (I know, I know, very punny.)

But seriously, I loved the twists and turns in the plot, very few of which I saw coming. And it's always fun to romp in the English countryside.

As always, Sadie's a bit on the preachy side, though I found her less so in this book than in Lemon Tart.

And the recipes look wonderful! I made the eponymous trifle for my husband (he lived in Scotland for a few years and had fond memories of that dish). He loved it!

Phil Wain has been a freelance motorcycle journalist for almost 15 years and is features writer for a number of publications including BikeSport News and Classic Racer, having also been a regular contributor to MCN, MCN Sport, Irish Racer and Motorcycle Racer. I love this book! The projects have so much personality -- I was going to say "cute" here but you can already see by the cover photo that they are wonderful. Excellent photos and directions. I am so pleased to have added this book to my library.

Some are cute, but not many. Maybe it's the clothes on the hippos/reindeer. Just don't find them as cute as I thought based on the cover. haha, don't judge a book by its cover. I was going to return, but I didn't buy it with prime, so I might as well keep it for the patterns, I can obviously not make clothing for the animals (scarf pictured on cover is cute). animals in the book: tall bird (with striped blue shirt), aofrementioned hippo, fawn (cute, but unnecessary headband), penguin (adorable), husky, duckling (I'd prefer it not on its feet, weird beak), awful looking panda, cute cow (minus the outfit), front cover hedgehog, "standing" fox which will never stand like that on its own, lamb (pretty cute), turtle, kangaroo with its joey in her pocket (not cute but i think it's the thin nose and tiny eyes, so easy fix, with a lame flower on the head), fox (pretty cute, not in love with the extra white wrinkles to the face- I do like the tiny legs vs large tail and head), scary looking reindeer- he looks ill), Maybe they should have stopped with book 2.

A must read for all investors if you are not familiar with the content already

The book shows that certain kinds of stocks (small stocks, low p/e stocks, etc.) outperform decade after decade (60+ years!) without being much more risky. All investors should be familiar with these results. Your return would be 5-10 percentage points higher than average just by following some very simple rules. The first time I read this book it really shocked me. If it is so simple to get superior returns, why are almost all fund managers just getting average returns?

The book is full of statistics providing the details, but there is also useful information in the text. I would have preferred to move 2/3 of the statistics to an appendix because they do not add value. For some reason the author really likes to pile table after table to increase the page count. My guess is that the author thinks this gives the book more credibility. That is silly.

The author is not trained in statistics. However, the book is now in its fourth edition and he has responded to critique of previous editions. The author is familiar with standard deviation, Sharpe ratios, etc., so he is certainly not clueless. There are many ways this could have been a stronger book had the author known more about statistics. For instance when he is constructing composite indicators. There is for instance some data mining going on when he constructs the indicators.

A similar but much more academic approach is found in Expected Returns: An Investor's Guide to Harvesting Market Rewards (Wiley Finance). That is a better book and is much more detailed and sophisticated. To enjoy that book you should be able to read academic finance literature. If you are able to do so, that book is much better than the current book. Still, the current book is pretty good.

There are other weaknesses in the book. The author does not try to understand why the market behaves as it does. He claims that private investors cannot buy stock below 200M in market capitalisation. All together these are really minor quibbles that should not influence your decision to buy the book.

The book is good, but after four editions I would have expected a bit more of the book. The core message is actually the same in all books. The additional years of data and more sophisticated statistics actually does not change any of the main conclusion. Still, I would recommend that you get the latest edition.

Dated Book Offers Look Back at Popular Investment Strategy

While this book was revolutionary in the 1990s, it was obsolete when first published because it got exploited by investors everywhere as soon as it was known. What Works on Wall Street is in its 4th edition but has not even been updated since the 3rd edition. It did work as far as finding a strategy that's effective when back-tested but it is hopelessly outdated now. Jim has not had a hugely successful track record running money overall. O'Shaughnessy has worked in the US and Canada with mixed results. After the tech wreck the mutual funds Jim managed were shut down (Cornerstone Growth and Cornerstone Value) and the returns were fairly disappointing. In 1999, O'Shaughnessy started Netfolio, The Personal Fund Company, to offer individual investors the ability to build their own diversified portfolio over the internet. The company was closed in 2001. Jim had some decent returns in Canada until the 2008 downturn (when his fund experienced a 50% haircut!) but his ideas suffer from style bias since growth investments simply get slaughtered when the market is falling, flat or range-bound (as it appears to be now). Ultimately, returns from growth investing have shown to be inferior to value investing when risk is factored into the equation. The O'Shaughnessy US Growth Fund has returned 1.76% annualized over the last 10 years (as of Jan 2014) and has underperformed its peers in Small & Mid-Cap Equity and even treasury bills (visit Morningstar for more info). Needless to say, the ideas presented in this book don't have much practical value if you want to make money in the stock market and are even less applicable since 2008 but they do work as a history lesson. There is an overwhelming amount of data in this book so most of it is fairly dry reading.

Check out The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham or Triumph of the Optimists instead. Admittedly, What Works on Wall Street has managed to stay in print.

Review for 2011, fourth edition

I am a big fan of James O'Shaughnessy and I use a number of the strategies he outlined previously with good results.

I have returned my copy of the 4th edition. The previous editions had updated data for each strategy discussed, plus new strategies that were examined. Unfortunately, this edition does not. While I am interested in hearing his new findings, I expected, wanted and needed data updates for all the strategies previously reviewed, particularly those I use or am considering using. I was totally surprised and disappointed by this change.

I highly recommend his 3rd edition of this book.

How does one learn kanji, the characters of written Japanese? The traditional approach is rote memorization. Japanese children write each kanji hundreds of times at their desks, and eventually they are acquired. Michael Rowley offers a different way, a mnemonic-association approach that provides a hook on which to hang the meaning and retrieve it easily when the kanji comes into view. The concept is simple: each character is represented under the word or concept it stands for (such as turf, bamboo, eat, or duty), followed by the pronunciations of the word in Chinese and Japanese, and a drawing that captures the meaning and resembles the character enough so that it'll come to mind whenever the kanji is seen.

Organized thematically in chapters such as "Power," "Places," "Tools," "The World," "Food," "People," and "The Body," Rowley's book lets you learn the root symbols before teaching the words that add to them for further meanings. For example, the character for water is a splatter of three dashes that Rowley pictures as three splashing water drops. Later, you see that steam, float, boil, dirt, and bathe all build on the water character. For steam, there's the water character plus a series of lines that Rowley exaggerates to resemble swirling, vapory tendrils, and the association helps. Building on units of memory and relationship, recall is aided considerably by the simple yet evocative drawings. Rowley even manages to help with the hiragana and katakana syllabaries, providing appealing pictures that look a bit like the letters in question and begin with the same sounds. So the na letter looks like a knot, nu resembles Rowley's drawing of noodles held by chopsticks, and it's easier to remember which symbol means te when you picture a telephone pole.

It's hard to do Rowley's book justice with words, since the visual element is what makes it tick. He does a wonderful job, blending insight, imagination, and drawing technique, in a book that far surpasses the old rote method, making kanji learning both appealing and accessible. --Stephanie Gold

A lazy, and error-ridden missed opportunity

At first you'll be flipping to the notes in the appendix every verse-end for some tiny bit of extra info that should have been printed in-line (one really common note could have been done with a tiny icon right there in the entry kanji). Then you'll be flipping back and forth through the book for some radical or component kanji that should have been introduced earlier in the book than the entries that depend on it (that's just common sense and a common courtesy). By this stage you'll have several fingers stuck in several places in the book just to get to the bottom of a lot of the kanji. But sometimes the radical or component is right there on the same page; it's just ordered AFTER some kanji that depend on it, so you'll already have gone through the process of being bemused for a while before finally getting to the tiny bit of info that could have saved you the trouble. Oh, and at the start of the book, the reading order is top-to-bottom, left-to-right then it changes to left-to-right, top-to-bottom for no discernible reasons. Then you'll start to see that a lot of the notes are actually not in the appendix at all! WTF? And then that a lot of the references to radicals or components are mis-numbered, sometimes they're one or two off, or 10 off, or you just can't find them. In the end, you'll find that around half of the notes and references are dead-ends and you'll start to shake your head whenever you see one, and put your chances at 50-50 that it'll be a waste of time looking them up. Then you'll realize that some of the references are not factored correctly, and that a lot of the visuals are unintelligently chosen or just wrong-headed and distracting. One idea is to rotate a kanji 90 degrees and print that right next to the correct one, as if doing so will somehow help and not just imprint the wrong, and confusing, thing into your mind. This book's heart is in the right place but it's just so frustratingly badly executed. It's not completely useless (hence two stars), but it's pretty close. It was only my love of Japanese that gave me the strength to wade through this mess. Rowley, you need to rethink your book, reorder it, refactor it, get it proofread and checked for errors, get some other intelligent and imaginative collaborator to check your work, and get the copious lazy and inexcusable errors out of there and try again. A disgrace, really, for the price.

What good is the book with an English glossary

It is an alright book but it is very unorganized and sloppy. Many of the mnemonics are just purely silly. The author put in too many characters in the book with out the help of an english glossary. What good is the book with an English glossary. He expects the reader to learn it his way going page by page and learning them incrementally. Most of us have 9 to 5 jobs and do not learn this way and so when I am learning 'slowly' and at my own pace, it would make sense to have an English glossary to quickly reference a word or character. I have to have about over 50 language books and they all have an English glossary. Luckily I bought the book used for 50 cents but I would be very displeased if I paid the retail price, and would return this immediately.

WHAT A SHAME!

this author also wrote a book devoted to kana mnemonics. THAT book was brilliant, perfect, the must-have for beginner-beginners. THIS book frankly just sucks.

My MAIN objection? The atrocious font used for the kanji characters themselves. It makes the characters unrecognizable, if you memorized them using this book, you would not be able to recognize them as the same character when faced with the same kanji in the type of script-like font that is used in like 99 percent of other kanji references and in general usage of the language. this is obviously not true for the simpler characters, but why buy a book if it can only be hopeful to be useful up to about 10 to 15 percent of it's content?

My other objection is the choice of kanji represented. it seems like the author chose to include kanji based on whether they seem fun and interesting, rather than whether or not they would be useful in practical application.

the OTHER book, the one on the kana? Everyone beginning japanese needs to own it, it is indispensible. THIS book? No serious student of japanese, no one attempting to learn japanese with the ambition of some day actually being able to speak it, or even any dedicated otaku with the simple(but perfectly valid) dream of watching anime unsubtitled, should buy THIS book. It isn't even worth the warmth it would provide if you burned it.
