Watered down jumping off point - easy on the eyes

For what it is, it's wonderful. One must take into consideration that this is a non-fiction comic book and as such, it takes some liberties in the sake of brevity. We are talking about summing up a whole culture into less than 250 pages. Comments such as "this book is too general" or "it takes too many liberties" failed to see what this book is intended to be - a general overall for people with virtually no background knowledge of Korea. To that end, this book excels.

I also commend this book in its comparison with Japan, China, and America. The author has taken a vast amount of information and condensed it into very approachable subjects such as cultural identity, leadership and economic growth.

Let's not forget that this book is driven by it's artistic style which is quite pleasant and not distracting the least. For an animator, the script is well written and translated which includes very native-English references and subtle jokes that demonstrate his dedication tot he project.

All in all, it's a great non-academic read that is recommended to anyone looking to take an introduction to Korea without having to dig through countless volumes of ancient history and poorly translated, nationalistic rhetoric.

A very informative book about Korea

This book is, of course, a comic book for adults, which means that it is perhaps more simplified than a book consisting entirely of text might be. On the other hand, the drawings are clever and it presents the material in a way that says things than could not be said so intelligibly in a text-only book. It starts off with the disclaimer that it is comparing Korea only to the 50 wealthiest nations, rather than the 200+ that actually exist. Then it gets into a comparison of China, Japan and Korea based on the unique history of each country. There are a number of topics that I was entirely unaware of, such as the way in which some relatives must be addressed by a specific title (younger brother's wife, older nephew's wife) rather than by name, and the fact that Korean food is always highly spiced and served boiling hot.

It is the most amusing history of a country I have ever read. It is somewhat like the Mexican cartoonist Rius' books on Cuba and East Germany that I read long ago. Except for the fact that Rius was a Marxist and the author of this book is not. The humor shown in the drawings, however, is similar.

Most Americans know nothing about Korea, and this is a really good book to start with. The author is a South Korean who tries hard to be objective and mostly succeeds.

Great artwork, entertaining, unfortunately plagued by ignorance and propoganda - publisher apologized over anti-semetic claims

Great artwork, entertaining, unfortunately plagued by ignorance and propoganda. The book is 9900 Won retail.

Sadly this book is insulting and stereotypical of other cultures, and some of its claims were naeve or absurd to the point that I thought it was comedic satire..until I realized the author wasn't being sarcastic. I'm shocked at some of the ignorant assumptions and outright insults being spewed against other cultures. It's hard to tell which parts are intentional propaganda, and which parts are just ignorance. It shares a lot in common with North Korean texts I've read and Japanese revisionist textbooks, only cuter with cartoon characters and more international anecdotes.

First off, I think Korea has a rich and amazing culture and is a wonderful place and I've visited many times and have many friends both here and in Korea. I learned Korean and traveled every corner of the country and studied its history. It happens that I also think India and about a dozen other countries are great nations and cultures too. My comments only pertain to the outrageous things being said by this book, despite many good things about it.

Early on the book says a lot of things about what all Chinese people believe and why they did everything in their history. Half the time I was laughing, the other time I couldn't believe anyone could be this ignorant. The fact that the author even tries to make these kind of claims speaks for itself.

I noticed it even claims and I quote "China has shown a great deal of tolerance regarding Taiwan". That's funny, for most of the last 50 years China has threatened to invade on a yearly basis. China is about as tolerant as North Korea is of the South. Which I guess isn't a surprise since some South Koreans think that's true too. This claim is basically as outrageous as saying Korea is one country. The book is filled with this ignorance about dozens of countries.

The book simplifies history with childlike logic. For example it literally says that because England is an island like Japan, its people chose to modify foreign cultures a la the Catholic Church to the Anglican church. First of all, this happened because King Henry wanted a divorce and was refused by the Pope, in fact he had 6 wives in his life. It had little to do with the English people or culture (the actual point being made), foreign cultures (what?), or the fact that England is an island. By its own logic if this was the real reason, England would have gotten rid of the Catholic Church a thousand years before it actually did. I'm not going to cover the other hundred claims but this example shows the kind of logic being used.

What's ironic is a lot of claims really apply to Koreans as much as Japan or China. Early on it claims Chinese always think they're the best, when many Koreans think this way as well if not more so. The reality is this is simply a stereotype, and its disingenuous to suggest this is a Chinese stereotype and not a Korean or Japanese one as well.

The author even oversimplifies his own culture. He claims the reason Japan is 1% Christian and Korea 30%+ Christian boils down to Japan being animistic and Korea being shamanistic and animists think there are many gods but shamans think everything is one god. He can't explain the fact that much of Japan converted to Christianity even faster than Korea in the 16th century, until they were literally murdered by the masses or forced to renounce their religion by a military government. Or that many Koreans, even non-Christians, respected Christians for their opposition during Japanese occupation and that Christianity has genuine appeal for many Koreans.

The Korean economic growth is indeed a miracle, a credit to hard work and converging factors. What's insulting is they've dismissed all the other nations and their achievements in broad strokes. It says that since Germany and Japan were already "economic powerhouses" before being demolished in WWII, their economic miracles are anything but. Then it dismisses over a hundred 3rd world countries from comparison by saying it's easy for a third world country to post high growth. Classic. Essentially, the logic of this author is that any country more advanced than Korea isn't worth comparing to for one reason, and any country less advanced than Korean isn't worth comparing to either.

Almost every claim requires an asterisk and fine print. For example, "If you eliminate 75% of countries from consideration, Korea is the most blah blah", or "This has never happened in another country" when it's simply false and should be explained by another asterisk (but not).

The book swerves back and forth between fact and fiction, relying on technicalities. Well if we want to get technical, Korea isn't even a country. There's North Korea, and South Korean. Korea hasn't been a country for almost a hundred years. If you think that's being too technical and callous, try reading what this book has to say about other countries.

The book also makes two puzzling claims that Korea was a vassal was under China and only as a formality, and that Korea is constantly under invasion and the victim of aggressors. That's funny considering even in Korean museums they acknowledge the historical fact that Korea was a vassal of the Mongols and twice invaded Japan under them. These invasions, although failures, were extremely brutal and sadistic and ironically only exceeded by the Japanese invasions of Korea. The fact is Korea was a full vassal and launched joint military strikes as such, and it's pretty malicious to pretend this never happened. What actually happened is pretty generous to Korea - they had little choice but to be vassals and agree to invade with the Mongols and send troops.

Now the book actually has a lot of good content and interesting commentary. It's just constantly mixed in with garbage and propaganda. So I enjoyed a lot of content at the same time as I'd roll my eyes thinking "Oh not this again". The author clearly read the cliff notes of history and filled in the blanks with classic child logic.

The author clearly has talent and a lot of funny things to say. If the author had turned this into satire, it would have worked for a chapter or two until it revealed that this book itself represents the distorted view Koreans have about the world. But it doesn't and goes through pains to explain and qualify itself, and that's why it's not even satire.

Korea is such as wonderful place, even people I've known who went to North Korea tell of how no matter how corrupt the government the good of individuals is hard to defeat. This book is an exception to that, the South Korean analogy to North Korean and Japanese propoganda.

I thoroughly enjoyed and learned from this book. As a principal, I'm often too busy to need anything but the WHAT and the HOW associated with school change. I like how the book focuses on practical advice to help plan for school change and create your own list of specific actions to be taken. It's an easy read and is very conversational in style. I enjoyed it, even if I'll never do any of the projects

Let me begin with some quick background info. If you're considering purchasing this book, then you've probably heard of the American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI); and if you're familiar with the AGI catalog and marketing, then you know that this book is one of the bonus items included in their entry-level "Practical Gunsmithing" course. Curiosity is what ultimately led me to purchase this book, to get an "inside preview" (so to speak) of AGI's basic course.

I have to admit I enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover, and I found the procedures simple to follow and understand. I have no doubt I can do any of these projects. Will I ever do any of them? Maybe one or two, but that's about it. The author seems to be more of a hunting cowboy type and an avid Cowboy Action Shooting enthusiast, and many of the projects deal with old lever guns and shotguns. Nothing wrong with that, just not my area of focus. For example, when I saw a project titled "Chamber And Bore Polishing" I thought, "Alright! I can finally fix that feeding problem I have with my [a certain model of combat handgun I own]!" Nope, wrong. The project showed how to polish the chambers on a double-barrel shotgun instead of the "normal" conotation of polishing the chamber on a semi-auto pistol or any sort of rifle. In the entire book there was only one handgun project, and in keeping with the cowboy theme, that project was to replace the trigger return spring on a Ruger single-action revolver.

Overall the project procedures were spot-on, but there is one project in particular that I have to criticize slightly: shortening a barrel. The author assumes (because it's his rifle) that a scope will be mounted on the rifle after the barrel is shortened, but what if you want open sights instead? There was no mention of how to install a new front sight where there was never one before; and depending on whether the rifle had open sights to begin with, a new rear sight might need to be installed from scratch also. He also made sure to use a stainless steel barrel in his example, so no touch-up blueing was required afterward. That's the only project in the book that I feel was left incomplete. Well, actually, now that I think about it, the scope mounting project assumed the receiver was already drilled & tapped, so I guess that project is somewhat incomplete as well, though perhaps drilling & tapping a receiver is a separate project in its own right.

Many of the projects require specialty tools; it'll cost quite a pretty penny to buy all the tools, jigs, fixtures, and materials referenced in this book! And where are you supposed to store all these specialty tools and set up large power tools like drill presses and belt sanders? This book is written for people who live on rural acreage and have a separate home workshop in the backyard; not too practical for people whose "workshop" is a corner of a garage in a high-density Southern California metropolis (especially if they actually use that garage for parking cars instead of setting up a workshop!). It's a catch-22, I think. Anyone who has a home workshop to perform these projects probably already knows how to do them and doesn't need this book, and those of us who need the book also need a shop space.

But like I said earlier, I enjoyed reading every page of this book, and the material is well-presented (if you overlook all the typos). I can understand exactly what's going on and follow what the author is describing... and if *I* can, pretty much anyone can. The book is only 155 pages long but is PACKED with useful information; and when you consider the low price that Amazon charges for it, you just can't go wrong with this book. Even the book itself is high quality, a hardcover edition with thick glossy pages. I'm really glad I bought it, and that's the bottom line. After reading it, I'm also really glad I never bit on AGI's Practical Gunsmithing course for $597! :)

One last item of information. The very last chapter is devoted to building a custom bolt-action rifle from scratch. The author begins with a Mauser action from Charles Daly. Unfortunately, Charles Daly (K.B.I.) went out-of-business early last year (months before the publishing date of this book!), so it might be tough to start "from scratch" anymore; i.e. not many manufacturers sell bare actions. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Remington is selling the Mauser actions now, but I'm not 100% sure of that; they might be selling full rifles based on the actions instead.

A Good Book, Well Worth Reading

Oriented for the home shop, I thought the book has some useful information for a beginning gunsmith. This is not an all-inclusive Gunsmithing guide. I have read criticisms of the gunsmithing projects included in the latter section of this book as being very specific to certain makes of firearms. True, however the projects are examples, that when taken as a whole, serve give the reader a glimpse into a common Gunsmithing jobs. Not exactly groundbreaking information, but the book kept my attention with plenty of color pictures and an easy to read writing style. For me the book was enjoyable to read. The author has a self-deprecating style and is not afraid to share in the various Gunsmithing mistakes he has made in the past. In particular, the author gives examples of nearly ruining gunstocks when attempting to glass bed an action.

Although most of the information presented in the book is available from various sources on the internet, the book is concise, well written and worth the cover price. A few of the chapters that I found to be the most thorough and helpful were the sections dealing with the selection of tools and equipment and the setting up of a home workshop. Brownells is mentioned prominently thorough out the book, but what do you expect? Brownells is the premier Gunsmithing tool supplier in the US. Stock bedding is mentioned in detail, including many tricks and tips.

Overall, an interesting book with some basic information that is enjoyable to read. I rated the book four-stars because I enjoyed it. I do feel that it is not in the same class as the more the Kuhnhausen books, which I consider indispensible and five-stars.

I bought and read the book via Amazon's Kindle although I think paying for the hardcover version is a better way to go. For me, it is easier to read a traditional book than it is to sit down in front of the laptop and focus. If I find the hardcover version at my bookstore, I would be willing to spend the money to put it on my bookshelf.

Good - project specific.

I've been shooting a while, but putting tools to my own guns has been something I've been reluctant to do, but as I shoot more. So I bought this looking for a sort of general intro to the basics.

This book offers chapters, each a project the author shows you - like glass-bedding a rifle in one chapter, and a number of other useful projects - recoil pad installation, etc.

What I got from it was a good look at what the rifle looks like dissasembled, which gave me the guts to take apart my rifle and make some minor trigger adjustments with the confidence that I could take it down and put it back together - and an understanding of how those parts related.

I think that the book could use a few more photos but overall, it's a good introduction and his emphasis on safety and using the right tool for the job should get most off on the right foot.

BRIEF SUMMARY
Chanel is a beautiful woman who is use to getting the men she wants. She has everything going for her, and when it comes to the men she plays with, it leaves the door open for trouble. The trouble she is faced with has her seeking revenge.

THOUGHTS

This is my second book by Samone Watkins, and I love me some Samone. This book was crazy with all the plotting of revenge and who's in on it. The moment the story started and we are being introduced to Chanel, her life seemed a bit interesting with the revolving door of men. This made the plot more interesting as I was trying to figure out what will happen to cause the need for sweet revenge. As more of the plot starts to unfold and more characters gets involved, Chanel became consumed; so consumed, that I do not want to be on her bad side if she wants revenge. Dario, I liked him. Didn't know what to expect from him, but he was working with a lot and gave a lot of sexy scenes. Her best friend, Tiffany, I liked her storyline; although I wish I had a bit more insight in her relationship, though the story isn't about her.

As for the end, I think the person in question got what he deserves and who was behind everything was an interesting twist. The book had errors, but again, didn't care and it didn't detract from a good story.

I really tried to look over the editing but I will address it. It was very bad! however, I will continue to read more from this author because her stories are well put together.

Tiffany is beautiful as well, but she doesn't have the charm and beauty like Chanel does. Men are attracted to Chanel like bees are too honey, including the powerful Andrew Beamer. Andrew Beamer is a man that gets what he wants, when he wants and that includes Chanel. Andrew didn't know that getting her would be such a challenge though...After turning down all of Andrew's advances, Chanel realizes she makes a mistake..A mistake that causes her to seek the sweetest revenge...

An improbable page-turner, a chilly and alluring novel

I read Enchi's "Masks" nearly ten years ago and knew I wanted to read it again. Having just completed reading Tyler's new translation of The Tale of Genji, I figured it would be a good time to return to it. You don't have to know much about Genji to enjoy Enchi's book -- but it helps. The world she describes is one that is her own: I have sensed characters something like this in other Japanese novelists, but Enchi's characters are really unique: they exist on cultural 'roids, making a deeper impression on one than they should. I'm not convinced that such characters exist in reality, but I do believe that Enchi believes they do.

Enchi uses Genji, Tales of Ise, Noh theater, and a bit of Kojiki as if it were still very much a part of the milleu these 20th century (circa 1958?) characters inhabit. However, instead of a "mythic" structure where the modern characters re-enact the personalities of the past, they are rooted in Enchi's world. The tragedy for many of the characters in the book is not so much that they are doomed to repeat the past, but that they will be doomed to repeat their mistakes in the future. As another reviewer suggested, the book ends with a lot of questions. It is a highly poetic novel without a clear sense of resolution, but it reads remarkably fast and is quite enjoyable. Bound to generate hours of discussion as one tries to look beneath its surface.

Fumiko Enchi has a remarkable body of work including short stories, novels and a translation of the _Tale of Genji_ from the Classical Japanese to modern (quite a task that legend speaks of her losing her vision partially to accomplish).
This is one of the most amazing novels that I have read. It is about the rage of women and to what extraordinary lengths that vengeance and love can call in a woman and in a manner through all women. The text is imbued with references and imagery from classical literature (Enchi is a classical scholar as was her father) but not knowing the references does not detract from the raw power of the text.
It is a short work and can be a dense read with some of the subtle references but the unmistakable cold anger that runs through it is markedly different from Enchi's other renowned work, _The Waiting Years_. The female characters are more dynamic and the male characters not as reprehensible as in her other works The novel may make some men uncomfortable in reading it since men are a focus of anger and vengeance.
If you are familiar with Japanese literature and symbology the work provides an extra layer of meaning from the bare text. The blurring of real and dream is remiscent of older tale literature and the use of various images such as, Noh masks adds further resonance. There are no footnotes nor explanatory notes so be prepared for that.
It is a pity that not much of Enchi's work has been translated but if you were to choose _Masks_ and the _Waiting Years_ you will not be disappointed.

USE CAUTION: 2 different books listed in one listing.

I completely agree with other reviewers, that this book is a must have for every weaver, BUT ...

I was looking for the revised edition of this book. Amazon listing for revised edition offered 2 options: hardcover and paperback. As I clicked paperback it changed the edition without any warning and I ended up ordering the 2014 reprint (the one with red cover) of A Handweaver's Pattern Book, its original edition.

That is a totally different book. For comparison, 2014 reprint, or this (red) book only has 142 pages as opposed to 217 pages in the revised (green) version; entire chapters are missing in the red book and those chapters that match the ones in the green book, list fewer patterns. I didn't have time to count the total number of patterns in both editions, just by my estimate: red book has less then half of the patterns included in the green book. Even the format of the red book is very unpleasant: the figures, and drafts are much smaller than in the green edition, often times too uncomfortable to read.

Quite confusingly, Amazon decided to put both these books into the same listing, but they are entirely different books. I notified them of the fact, but they merely added the picture of 2014 paperback edition while still not changing the listing.

SUMMARY: If you are looking to purchase this handweaver's classic, stay clear of red cover 2014 edition and make sure you are ordering a revised edition, published in 1950 (the one with green cover).

I ordered a used copy (the green edition)and am now satisfied that I I now have the correct book

Don't buy this edition. It is not the book you're looking for. Hard to read and the patterns/pages do' nt match. looks as though it's been hand copied, very small and vague to read. the green book book is the one you want.

Handweaver patterns

I found out after receiving this and looking for a specific draft that this edition isn't the complete one. There is another edition with a green cover that is more complete and is actually the one I wanted. I have returned this. There isn't anything wrong with this edition other than not being as complete.

Yo this book was mad good. At first I didnt know if it was going to be good because of the title but DAMM was I wrong. K'wan did it again.

Road Dawgz has the making of a Great movie.

I have just about all of K'wan's books. This book was a very good read, I kept it in my car when I went into work so that I could only read it on lunch break. I kept it in my car when I got home so that I wouldn't read it all in one night. Only took me 2 days to read, and that was really stretching it for me. So good I didn't want the story to end.

I'm late to the game on this book and I'm usually not much on this type of fare but this book was well written and kept you on the edge a lot. Anyone who grew up in an urban area can relate to the story, anyone who didn't can learn alot about the hustle game from this story. In the final analysis though there are lessons to be learned from this story about why the hustle game is a dead end and only a select few survive to talk about it.
