People can be interested in language, writing and scripts. They may wonder how, when and where did writing evolve? Do alphabets function better than hieroglyphs? And are we today, in the computer age, moving towards a "universal language" of signs and symbols? This text aims to demystify writing for the general reader. It explains the interconnection between sound, symbol and script for each of the major writing systems in turn, and discovers and deciphers writing forms from cuneiform and Egyptian and Maya hieroglyphs to alphabets and the scripts of China and Japan today. Throughout, the reader is guided by step-by-step graphic analysis of the way each script works, with illustrated examples.

A textbook history of writing
By Clayton D. Strand
If nothing else mattered, the lush photography of this book would bring it to the forefront of efforts to describe the history of written communications. Unfortunately, while it is extremely well written by an informed author, it has more in common with a text book than a real history. I cannot argue with most of the facts in the book, but I could argue with some of the conclusions. When authors, no matter how talented, no matter how well-informed, speak ex cathedra (my spelling here may well indicate the part of alphabetic writing which is decidedly not phonetic, in English, at least), especially when relentlessly advocating a particular point of view in a controversy, generally I am inclined to ignore them. A glance through the bibliography, though, shows that Robinson is quite willing to give a casual reader enough sources to spend many hours learning what is known of the history of scripts, and writing.
All in all, I would say this book is an excellent way to spark an interest in the subject.

Evolution is not singular
By Dave Mowers
It happens on many levels and in language you will get over-lap and redundancy. How anyone can slight the conclusions of informed students like the writer after reading the same exact history of the shunning of hobbyists for the "learned professors" only approach detailed here is nuts. It is readily apparent that cultures in contact with one another exchanged ideas on everything which is why these "keys" or translation guides exist in the first place that have allowed us to reconstruct dead languages and writing systems. To say such ingenious systems were only logograms or only syllabic or pictograms seems quite ridiculous given the vast array of cultural similarities in archaeology. This book is awesome. I am using it to further my understanding of ancient mythology and thought it would be dull and centered largely on language itself but to the contrary it gives an excellent historical perspective that has allowed me to confirm L.A. Waddell's findings on the connection between Thor, Induru and the Turans which he states directly without providing a reference to what he was looking at or how he drew that conclusion!

Hittite "Tarhun" for instance as their "storm god" is identical to Turan, Duran, Induru, Tor, Thor (Sumerian Dur-An) "heavenly god" giving you perspective on the Trojans as Hittites which when coupled with the Linear B translation chart on pg. 118 then compared with the Hittite cuneiform block back on pg 91 shows you that Hittite logogrammic cuneiform is actually rudimentary Minoan Linear B, the Linear B being a hieratic (in cursive) form of Hittite. Now I got that from reading this book and never would have made this connection without Mr. Robinson's easy-to-understand explanations. Sure enough a quick internet search just now on this shows that current scholastic study on the subject is proving my "leaping" judgment true. These leaps of inspiration are why we are able to figure out dead languages and ancient history in the first place. This book is a fantastic primer for beginners.

Good book, but missing the whole story of writing from the 19th and 20th century!!!!
By JM
I really like this book. The first chapters were very good.

Unfortunately, the last chapters on Chinese and Japanese writing where written hastily, I think they could have elaborated more on Spencerian or cursive lettering from the 19th and 20th century. This is non-existing and disappointing.

Mourning Philology: Art and Religion at the Margins of the Ottoman Empire, by Marc Nichanian

"Pagan life seduces me a little more with each passing day. If it were possible today, I would change my religion and would joyfully embrace poetic paganism," wrote the Armenian poet Daniel Varuzhan in 1908. During the seven years that remained in his life, he wrote largely in this "pagan" vein. If it was an artistic endeavour, why then should art be defined in reference to religion? And which religion precisely? Was Varuzhan echoing Schelling's Philosophy of Art?

Mourning Philology draws on Varuzhan and his work to present a history of the national imagination, which is also a history of national philology, as a reaction to the two main philological inventions of the nineteenth century: mythological religion and the native. In its first part, the book thus gives an account of the successive stages of the orientalist philology. The last episode in this story of national emergence took place in 1914 in Constantinople, when the literary journal Mehyan gathered around Varuzhan the great names to come of Armenian literature in the diaspora

Superstar chefAlex Stupak's love of real Mexican food changed his life; it caused him toquit the world of fine-dining pastryand open the smash-hit Empelln Taqueriain New York City. Now he'll change the way you make--and think about--tacos forever.

TACOSis a deep dive into the art and craft ofone of Mexico's greatest culinary exports.We start by making fresh tortillas from corn and flour,and variationsthat look toinnovative grains andflavor infusions.Next we master salsas, from simple chopped condiments tocomplex moles that simmer for hours and have flavor for days.Finally we explorefillings,bothtraditional and modern--from apineapple-topped porkal pastor to pastrami with mustard seeds.

ButTACOSis more than a collection of beautiful things to cook.Wrapped upwithin itis an argument: Through these recipes, essays, and sumptuous photographs by Evan Sung, the 3-Michelin-star veteran makes the case that Mexican food should be as esteemed as the highest French cooking.

Unconventional and creative tacos for foodies
By Deidre512
This taco cookbook is a unapologetic and bold collection of inspirational recipes for making unique taco dishes.

There are some really interesting recipes in this book. This book is also not for the "casual" or traditional taco maker as the recipes are likely not what you are expecting.

The tone of the recipes is set in the first half of the book which gives a brief background on Alex Stupak and his culinary journey, some fundamentals on spices and chilies, and then a pretty lengthy explanation on the type of corn that best lends itself to tortillas, tortilla recipes, and salsa recipes. Thoughtfully, the tortilla recipes give you the ingredient option of easier to find masa harina (as well as the harder to find fresh masa). In addition to corn and flour tortillas recipes, there are some creative fusion recipes such as pistachio, saffron, and rye tortillas. The subsequent dedication to salsa recipes emphasizes the wide variety of ways a salsa can create a completely different taste and look to a taco.

The second half of the book is dedicated to taco recipes. While the opening notes suggest that some of the recipes are classics, I tend to disagree. That being said, the recipes are pretty cool. Some examples of recipes include Chicken Tacos with Kale and Salsa Verde, Skirt Steak Tacos, Fried Oyster Tacos, Pineapple Tacos, and Wild Spinach Tacos.There are also a few taco recipes that would lend themselves to breakfast as well as a couple of dessert taco recipes.

The closing section has recipes for components (such as Adobo paste) that are used in some of the recipes.

The writing tone of this book is very down to earth and lightly humorous. There are really nice photos throughout the book mostly showing plating of the final dishes but some showing steps along the way.

Pretty much all of the recipes require advance planning and preparation. They do not lend themselves to throwing together on the spur of the moment.

I recommend this cookbook to fans of Alex Stupak and foodies who enjoy innovative spins on traditional recipes.

The Taco As A Trojan Horse
By Joe MacBu
This is a book by a white guy with fancy chef credentials from multiple Michelin-starred restaurants, who then went on to open fancy taco restaurants in Manhattan. And a white girl food writer from Brooklyn. With photos by a Manhattan photographer. New York City is not known for tacos. If that matters to you, then this book is not for you.

This isn't a book about "authentic" Mexican tacos. Instead, it's a book that holds up the humble tortilla in the true light it deserves. Stupak understands that the most critical part of a taco is the quality of the tortilla. You will never have a superb taco with packaged tortillas. It needs to be made with fresh masa, shaped by hand and cooked seconds before it's inhaled. Pages are devoted to the process of nixtamalization of corn and to ways of grinding it to masa. Alas, Stupak says that one can only make proper masa for tortillas using an industrial machine, so it is inaccessible to most folks. Maybe you live in a city that has a tortilleria that sells fresh masa. Or perhaps us home cooks can get lucky with a metate, or a wet grinder as is used in Indian homes to grind rice and lentils into batter for dosas. If not, there's always masa harina, the dried masa flour that requires us to just add water. While far from fresh masa, masa harina still produces superior tortillas than most U.S. taquerias serve up. To all the wheat flour tortilla lovers, don't worry, also included is a recipe for making those, with lard. And to those who love non-traditional ingredients, we also get tortillas using rye, buckwheat, yuca, beet, pistachios and even chorizo (yes, in the dough).

Next up are salsas, the "coup de grce" of taco making, according to the authors. Two dozen recipes lead us from traditional salsas (de arbol, roja, verde) to moles (Poblano, verde) to a North African-inspired version with argan oil and dried apricot. No matter their origin, they laboriously start from scratch and end in supreme deliciousness.

All the labors of love come together in a taco, once the fillings are considered. And these are world apart from your $2 street tacos. The authors give due respect to the traditionalists by discussing the ways of al pastor and how to approximate it at home without a vertical spit. We also get tacos with potato and chorizo, conchinita pibil (the easy way, and also the digging a friggin' pit way), huitlacoche, carnitas and barbacoa. But those are not where the creativity flourishes. Instead, that Michelin-starred experience really expresses itself as sea urchin with guacamole, bay scallop ceviche with cocoa vinaigrette, grilled arctic char with cape gooseberry, lamb tartare, and even pastrami (to put on that rye tortilla). These tacos would feel at home in a Tulum retreat as well as they do in downtown Manhattan.

Even if you frown at these fancy fillings, you cannot take away from the backbone of the book, which are the superb sections on tortillas and salsas that will rival the quality of any made by authentic Mexicans. That alone is worth the price of admission, and will give you enough of a footing to create your own fillings, fancy or not.

Heck, for those of you with a sweet tooth, there's even a dessert taco thrown in, with canela, pasilla, extra virgin olive oil, Maldon salt and dark chocolate. Brooklyn's Mast Brothers Chocolate is recommended, of course.

What a great month it's been for lovers of the taco - ...
By Char
What a great month it's been for lovers of the taco - first the fun, hip, irreverent love letter to Mexican taco culture that was Tacopedia, and now this intense, punk-rock manifesto of the taco as high cuisine. Tacos: Recipes and Provocations delivers on both halves of its subtitle, in spades. His recipes range from the traditional to the avant-garde, with a strong core of fundamental respect for the cuisine, its techniques, and its multicultural and evolving spirit. His provocations will rattle the cage of many a pretentious foodie who'd prefer to see Mexican cuisine frozen in time and served for under $5.

The first half or so of the book centers on fundamentals: tortillas and salsas. Stupak is uncompromising here: fresh tortillas, or nothing. I tend to agree. He walks the reader through nixtamalizing corn, grinding it for masa, and pressing tortillas, including instructions on storage and on starting with masa preparada. Of note here is the range of flavored and amended tortillas, enriched by obvious (spinach, spices) and nonobvious (chorizo?!) additions, which have a long history in Mexico. He also has a pretty good flour tortilla recipe. The salsas are phenomenal. I made two of the salsas last night, and found them to be mindblowing - well balanced, intense, and unusual. I especially recommend the salsa macha, which reminded me of a cross between a pipian and buffalo wing sauce. My wife, who was born and raised in the DF, is ecstatic.

Recipes range from old favorites (carnitas, al pastor, barbacoa) to high-concept rethinks (pineapple tacos with lardo, pastrami with mustard seed salsa, sea urchin and guacamole.) With the exception of the pastrami one, which is a little precious, I think they all manage to embody a Mexican sensibility, flavor profile, ingredients, and general approach - even if the end result is cheffed-up and unconventional. Having eaten tacos filled with octopus slathered with Thai basil pesto in the DF and a memorable one of raw marlin tartare in Tijuana, I'm perfectly fine with some wild tacos in the mix. Tacos al pastor have their roots in 1950s Puebla and its Lebanese immigrants hawking shawarmah, and fried fish tacos use Japanese tempura batter. There's cosmopolitan, modern, gourmet restaurants all over Mexico serving food that's influenced by that of the Mediterranean, Asia, and even India. If incorporating other cultures' ideas was off-limits in Mexican cuisine, Mexican cuisine would not exist at all. I can't wait to tackle some of the off-the-wall recipes here.

Which brings me to my own provocation. As we've already seen in some of the reviews, many people - often Caucasians, often casual visitors to Mexico - seem to hold strong opinions on Mexican cuisine. They loudly and snarkily deride as "not traditional!" or "completely inauthentic" any food not served on their last vacation to Mexico or served in the grungy taqueria they pride themselves on having "discovered." These folks know just what authentic really is, and they're the arbiters of it. Obviously, I regard this attitude as deeply patronizing - and ironically unaware of the diversity and evolving nature of Mexican food.

Body Art/Performing the Subject, by Amelia Jones

An examination of the social and cultural significance of body art by a major new voice.

The past few years have seen an explosion of interest in body art, in which the artist's body is integral to the work of art. With the revoking of NEA funding for such artists as Karen Finley, Tim Miller, and others, public awareness and media coverage of body-oriented performances have increased. Yet the roots of body art extend to the 1960s and before. In this definitive book, Amelia Jones explores body art projects from the 1960s and 1970s and relates their impact to the work of body artists active today, providing a new conceptual framework for defining postmodernism in the visual arts.

Jones begins with a discussion of the shifting intellectual terrain of the 1950s and 1960s, focusing on the work of Ana Mendieta. Moving to an examination of the reception of Jackson Pollock's "performative" acts of painting, she argues that Pollock is a pivotal figure between modernism and postmodernism. The book continues with explorations of Vito Acconci and Hannah Wilke, whose practices exemplify a new kind of performance that arose in the late 1960s, one that represents a dramatic shift in the conception of the artistic subject. Jones then surveys the work of a younger generation of artists -- including Laurie Anderson, Orlan, Maureen Connor, Lyle Ashton Harris, Laura Aguilar, and Bob Flanagan -- whose recent work integrates technology and issues of identity to continue to expand the critique begun in earlier body art projects.

Embracing an exhilarating mix of methodologies and perspectives (including feminism, queer theory, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and literary theory), this rigorous and elegantexamination of body art provides rich historical insight and essential context that rethinks the parameters of postmodern culture.

A tough slog
By A Customer
I really wanted to love this book, because I like a lot of the art she writes about. But the prose is awful!! And it's actually not that Jones is "too" theoretical -- if anything, she might not be "theoretical" enough. Instead, she constantly uses current crit theory buzzwords -- "performative," "embodied," "subject" etc -- without ever really defining or locating them. And the readings of individual art works get buried under her heavy-handed "thesis."
This is one of those academic texts that feels like it started with an "idea," and found work to fit it. Not that her engagements with Hannah Wilke, Bob Flanagan, et al, aren't sincere, because they are. But they still seem without real awareness, and some of the author's "personal" observations are just dopey.
Somehow she seems new to the territory and wierdly conventional.

Thinking bodies
By M. Cheng
BODY ART/PERFORMING THE SUBJECT offers an excellent critique of a fascinating phenomenon in contemporary art: the artist's voluntary use of her/his body in art. In this superb and much-needed book, Amelia Jones defines body art "as a set of performative practices that, through such intersubjective engagement, instantiate the dislocation or decentering of the Cartesian subject of modernism." Anti-formalist intersubjectivity and poststructuralist criticism against the Cartesian mind/body split are the two theoretical angles from which Jones examines body art pieces from the 1960s to the 1990s. She argues that body art performances, enacted against the grain of normative subject, exposes the logic of exclusion assumed by the modernist art history and criticism.
With this rigorous, incisive, and politically informed thesis, Jones develops a stunning series of analytical re-readings: from the action painting of Jackson Pollock--filmed by Hans Namuth; the erotic/violent/contemplative body sculpture of Vito Acconci; the feminist performances of Hannah Wilke, who marks sexuality, vitality, and mortality with equal measure of intelligence, humor, and courage; to the intersection of body and technology as exemplified by the works of Gary Hill, James Luna, Orlan, Bob Flanagan/Sheree Rose, Maureen Connor, Laurie Anderson, Lyle Ashton Harris, and Laura Aguilar. Other artists covered extensively in Body Art include Chris Burden, Yves Klein, Carolee Schneemann, Yayoi Kusama, Lynda Benglis, Marina Abramovic and Ulay, Adrian Piper, and Niki de Saint Phalle. The depth and breadth of Jones's theoretical references that particularize her portraits of these artists makes for the reading of this book a difficult but stimulating pleasure.
Provocatively argued and elegantly expressed, Body Art/Performing the Subject is a must-read for those interested in the debates over embodiment, subjectivity, performance, feminism, and theories of identity. The intensity of Jones's writing is the heat--and the cool--of a philosophical motion.

Off-mark performing?
By Kahlil Chaar
I bought Body Art: Peforming the Subject while doing a research paper for an undergrad course on Contemporary Art History. Amelia Jones' book brings a series of critically incisive contributions to current performance art and body art theoretical debates. Her use of phenomenologigal theory (Merleau-Ponty)is admirable amidst an American academia with a tendency to be over-run by fashionable perspectivisms oblivious to their own roots and histories. Yet, Jones' ambitious work is under-cut by a jargon-ridden prose that sometimes appears to go nowhere, especially when discussing Lacanian psychoanalysis and concepts such as the body, the self, the subject and the other. For example, while trying to argue for an anti-Cartesian view of the subject, Jones insists in mantaining the grammatical dichotomy of "body/self". Instead of pushing Derrida's supplement theory to its limits, Jones seems to have a step in and a step out of the normative and dangerous dichotomies that have plagued Western thought since Descartes.
Still, Amelia Jones' Body Art is a necessary book if one is interested in taking a peek at body and performance art debates. While it does not compare favorably to Schneider's rigourous and well-written dialogue with postmodern and performance theories nor to Goldberg's more traditional yet fascinating take on performance art, Body Art: Performing the Subject remains as an intelligent contribution to the history of performance and body art.

Quite interesting and detail
By lordhoot
I read Chirs McNab's account of the hijacking and recovery of Lufthansa Flight 181 in 1977. I always thought that subject matter such as this would be a best fit for Osprey Raid series. Anyway, this book is about how an elite team of West Germany's counter-terrorist unit (GSG-9) successfully rescued all the passengers of that hijack jet after the terrorists murdered the primary pilot in cold blood. The book goes into the background of the terrorist movement, political reasoning and with ease that they were able to smuggled their weapons aboard the jetliner. The author also traced the creation of the GSG-9 unit that started off with the Munich Massacre during the 1972 Olympics of Israeli athletics and the inability of West German law enforcement to handled the situation.

The book proves to be well written and researched. The author paints a very clear picture of the situation and his prose is firm and to the point. The reader will get a clear understanding of how the hijacking went down, how the rescue operation took place, the roles played by the major players in what turned out to be a textbook operation on hostage rescue. It also shows how a well trained and determined counter terrorist team can overcome a deadly situation without a loss of life among the innocents. But they still needed the cooperation of the local authorities to pulled it off. Of the four terrorists, three were shot down and fourth is ironically still alive to this day living in Norway. She was sentenced to 20 years but only served one year due to ill-health. Pretty sad considering that the pilot murdered by her cohorts, still lies dead.

I thought this book was highly informative and educational considering its format.

Great study of the LH181 Raid
By James D. Crabtree
In 1977 Palestinian terrorists took control of a Lufthansa airliner (at the same time the RAF took a prominent industrialist histage in Germany) and led them on an ordeal which would end at Mogadishu, Somalia. The GSG9 special police group made an end of the terrorists and liberated the remaining hostages with no casualties. This dates back to the last days of airline travel with no x-ray machines or metal detectors and the terrorists took control of plane with two pistols and explosives. GSG9, well-trained and equipped, quickly practiced their assault on an identical plane and were assisted by the terrorists choice of attire (bright red Che Guevera shirts). Well-illustrated with maps, photos and original artwork, the book is also well-written and very enjoyable. Only found one error, page 28: gray box describes "kill all eight hostages" should read "kill all eight terrorists."

It is okay
By A. M. Steiner
Received the book yesterday, and thought I would give it a read; there is a fair amount of information on the background of the terrorists, and their organizations, but not that much in the book on GSG-9 and the actual storming of Flight LH 181. The volume seemed a bit more political than tactical. The book was purchased as not much information on GSG-9 exits on this side of the water. There are good photos however.

Hidden Intercourse: Eros and Sexuality in the History of Western Esotericism, by Wouter J. Hanegraaff, Jeffrey J. Kripal

From rumors about gnostic orgies in antiquity to the explicit erotic symbolism of alchemical texts, from the subtly coded eroticism of medieval kabbalah to the sexual magic practiced by contemporary occultists and countercultural translations of Asian Tantra, the history of Western esotericism is rich in references to the domains of eros and sexuality. This volume, which brings together an impressive array of top-level specialists, is the first to analyze the eroticism of the esoteric without sensationalism or cheap generalizations, but on the basis of expert scholarship and attention to textual and historical detail. While there are few domains where the imagination may so easily run wild, the various contributions seek to distinguish fact from fiction-only to find that historical realities are sometimes even stranger than the fantasies. In doing so, they reveal the outlines of a largely unknown history spanning more than twenty centuries.

Review

Hidden Intercourse is a book that turns people's heads around, so thatthey can never think of sex the same way again.-Joscelyn Godwin

A collection of essays addressing a doubly fascinating topic, namely, theintersection of the erotic and the esoteric in western culture from ancient Greece to contemporary California--where west meets east, as the American counterculture supplements its already eclectic garb with the mantle of a refashioned Asian Tantra.-Virginia Burrus

A thoughtful, well-written, and extremely wide-ranging text that examines the crucial role of eros/sexuality in the western esoteric tradition.-G. William Barnard

A smorgasbord of sexually occult revelations
By P. Nagy
Excerpt: In recent years, the academic study of Western esotericism has been developing rapidly from a somewhat obscure specialty pursued by a few dedicated researchers into a burgeoning professional field of scholarly activity and international organization. Once a domain restricted to the relatively secluded circles of specialists and hence hidden from the sight of most academic and non-academic readers, it is now becoming an increasingly popular topic of public and critical discussion in the context of journals, monographs, conferences, and scholarly organizations. The book you now hold in your hands is the fruit, one of many, of this growing branch of knowledge.
That there are connections between Western esotericism and the domains of eros and sexuality (which extend far beyond what we normally mean by "sex") has, of course, been recognized before, not least by practitioners, and the various contributions to this volume provide abundant illustration of that fundamental and indubitable fact. But scholarly analyses of how and why the two domains of esotericism and eroticism are so intimately interwoven are difficult to find. Moreover, the closely related problem (or is it a promise?) of how the history of sexuality in the West might be related to the history of Western eso-tericism implies a range of further questions that still remains virtually untouched. In the absence of any such developed analysis, only a few tentative suggestions will be made here. In a historical field this new, this rich, and this provocative, all we can reasonably do is point to the heavy fruit hanging low on the branches, and then hope a sufficient number of readers will choose to begin plucking it. Our own general sense is that such fruit contains its own important truths, but these are, at best, difficult to grasp for a whole host of intellectual, linguistic, political, historical, and social reasons...
The essayists ask and advance their own specific questions and proffer their own answers. Among their numerous illuminations, we might briefly mention the following figures and themes, not to summarize the content of Hidden Intercourse, much less to offer any premature closure, but simply in a spirit of temptation:
A common esoteric reading of the fruit of the garden of Eden as a patent sexual metaphor, with sexual differentiation understood either as a sign of the "Fall" and a subsequent mortality (hence the ascetic components of these traditions), or as the bipolar basis for a sexual technique of reunion and restoration of the primordial Adamic androgyne (hence the erotic practices of these traditions);
An ancient Christian mystery involving sacramental sexual union in the "bridal chamber";
The Levites of ancient Christian heresiology as a homosexual "priestly" trope;
Hermeneutical techniques that out-Freud Freud through readings like that of Psalm 1 and its flowing water as symbolic of seminal emission, or the Christian eucharist as a kind of secret spermatophagy or sperm-eating (with examples from the fourth century to the twentieth); Sufi saints coupled spiritually with jinniya or feminine spiritual beings in order to increase and transmit their baraka or supernatural power; The erotic nature of secrecy itself as a simultaneous revealing and concealing, that is, as a kind of linguistic strip-tease;
God as the delight of all delights, erotic and otherwise;
Mary as both the virgin mother and bride-lover of Christ; Marsilio Ficino as a conflicted homoerotic scholar who turned to an interpretation of Plato's Symposium at the instigation of his younger male friend in order to work through his sexual melancholy; Sulphur as paternal seed, mercury as menstrual blood;
Two-headed hermaphrodites;
Male sex with a (male) bull hide;
A popular sixteenth-century artist who drew things like women rubbing (psychotropic?) ointment on their genitals in order to "fly" to the Witches' Sabbath, a naked witch looking backwards through her vagina to see the Devil (on a Christmas card no less), and a dragon performing cunnilingus on a witch;
The Platonic model of the brain as producer of semen, with the spinal cord as the transmitter of this cerebral substance to the penis;
A Christian, goddess-like Sophia, who marries herself to a German theosopher on Christmas day, sensually "plays" with him for years, finds an appropriate house for him in Amsterdam, and then helps edit her departed lover's letters through a disciple;
The forward-looking social liberalism of the nineteenth-century American Spiritualists, which included such marvels as Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president of the United States, who also happened to be a famous spokesperson for free love, which she believed would help implement a kind of millennial utopia in which young women would date the dead;
Thomas Lake Harris married to his divine faerie, the Lily Queen, and living in celibate chastity with his second wife;
The "internal respiration" of Harris and his community, experienced as a kind of bodily electricity flowing from the reproductive organs, particularly the vagina;
Hashish, magic mirrors, and a cosmic domain of scintilla-like souls or monads, each a reflection of God as Light accessible through the secrets of sexual magic;
The father of psychoanalysis in Italy involved in occult traditions;
The "practice of separation" of the solar Self and the alchemical creation, through sexual magic, of a second subtle "glorious body" to survive the physical death of the mortal frame;
A fictional Tantric town in the American Midwest called "Paradox," where the Wizard of Oz meets the human potential movement, Asian Tantra meets Western sexual magic, and the counterculture comes to the heartland...

One of the best and most authoritative overviews available.
By The Mysterious Mr. E.
Not unlike The Dictionary of Gnosis and Western Esotericism, this book contains among the best writing currently available in English on a number of lesser known currents of sexual magick in the West: such as the Fraternitas Saturni. Academics are starting to 'get it,' at least on an intellectual level and what they related are typically well sourced and authoritative insights into relatively arcane matters, which have here to fore suffered under a cloud of obscurantist and obfuscating occultnik sensationalist blather. This quote from the Introduction indicates the approach taken to this subject:
... what is so striking about so many of the figures treated in these essays is their conviction that in the depths of human sexuality lies hidden _the_ secret of religion, occultism, magical power; spirituality, transcendence, life, God, Being itself. This astonishing connection, such figures would insist, is not metaphorical, or rhetorical, or symbolic, as some would prefer to have it. It is fundamental, cosmic, ontological, religious. We are dealing here, then, with a metaphysics of sex, itself intimately entwined with the destiny of the soul."

Loquacious Disappointment
By Innocence Branch
Loved the cover art but the book was entirely too tedious to get beyond the initial chapter..... I wanted to love it or even like it (and I am a full time graduate student reading dense material all of the time). Couldn't get any pleasure from it. Very disappointed
