About the Author
Stefan Roesch has worked in the tourism industry for over fifteen years and is currently Deputy Managing Director for CenTouris, a market research and tourism consulting institute based at the University of Passau, Germany. He is also a freelance consultant in film tourism, an area he has been researching for ten years. As part of his doctoral thesis Stefan undertook fieldwork research on several case studies, including The Lord of the Rings in New Zealand, Star Wars in Tunisia and The Sound of Music in Austria. He regularly speaks at international conferences and advises the industry on how to utilise film for marketing strategies. In 2013, Stefan founded the film production company Punakaiki Productions.

Some Tidbits About "Impossible Joy"

For those who don't know, Ron J is a pseudonym for the actual author, Roy K. He is the founder of Sexaholics Anonymous (SA), a 12-step program of recovery for people addicted to lust. Roy wrote this book in 1999 when he had 23 years of SA sobriety. The book is heavily oriented for Christians/Catholics and is not really appropriate for the generic, 12-step, "God as we understand Him" crowd.

Victory over Temptation

Having recently finished reading Impossible Joy, I feel compelled to respond to some of the statements made in the previous review.
First, Ron's premise that we addicts are "sinners" is completely consistent with the 12 step movement. Our illness compels us to perpetrate moral crimes. The fact that it is truly an illness explains why we can't stop on our own, but does not absolve us of the responsibility for, or consequence of our "sins". Ron's analysis of scripture clearly articulates how Jesus, the true "higher power," not only saved us from the ultimate consequence of our sins, but can also provide ongoing victory over all of our temptations, one temptation at a time.
The previous reviewer's assertion that the original 12 steps formulated by Alcoholics Anonymous doesn't have Jesus in it, is laughable. Bill Wilson based the steps on the spiritual principles of the Oxford Group, a nondenominational Christian movement founded by Frank Buchman, a Lutheran minister. It is true that Bill and Dr. Bob removed references to Christ, sin, the Holy Spirit, etc, from the 12 steps in order not to alienate alcoholics of other faiths, or no faith, because AA's primary goal was sobriety, not salvation. However, the Road of Happy Destiny, mapped out in these steps, leads directly to our savior. In Impossible Joy, Ron describes how Jesus, walking with us, can bear our temptations and help us live - not free from temptation, but free from the obsession of our particular weakness and the compulsion to act on our temptation.
Certainly people who reject God's laws and his son are forced to reject this book. Recovery from addiction requires admission of our powerlessness to do right, repentance, and absolute surrender to God (Steps 1 - 3). Impossible Joy is advanced recovery, a valuable resource for us addicts who want to move beyond sobriety to true recovery.
In fairness, since this book forces us to look at our powerlessness and our desperate need for God, it will not appeal to those who can't face the truth. In fact, it could cause them to resort to politically-correct-sounding attacks and name calling.

The Hard and Real Truth

There really are not adequate words to describe this book. I am a recovering Sexaholic and have been active in 12-Step fellowships, and this book has brought me to a new level of recovery. It has helped to point me to a new level of connection with my Savior, and has given me real hope for a life of joy. I could continue to gush for paragraphs, but I won't. Get the book, read it and learn for yourself. It is ADVANCED recovery, for an ADVANCED form of addiction, sexaholism. I know guys who have been able to maintain 15+ years of sobriety from alcohol who can't maintain a year of sobriety from lust because they can't, or won't apply this book to their lives. The solution to addiction, "slavery to sin," is simple in its description, a mere 270 some odd pages. It is however not simple to do, it takes diligence and the help of someone greater than yourself, a Savior. Until you find God, the real God, there is no hope for salvation from your powerlessness over the disease that will ultimately kill you, SIN.

I searched for help from religion, even Christianity, but Religion couldn't save me. I tried to do it on my own, I couldn't save me. I tried to get help from others, others couldn't save me. Only God, as described in this book, only Jesus could save me. This has been my experience, and whatever you believe, you can't disprove my experience, nor can you disprove the experience of Ron J.. He lays out not some theoretical formula for recovery, but rather what was "forced on him by the crucible" of his recovery. Whatever you believe, this works, and it works completely. Those who attempt to make 12-Step programs some secular attempt at hope consider this, some goverment agencies won't refer to 12-steps because they consider it a breech of seperation between church and state. And, Yes, the original name of AA was going to be "The James Gang," based on the book of James in the Bible, "The Big Big Book," but they wanted people to discover God from experience, not preaching. Discover him, I have, and you can too, and the saving power of his life, death, and resurection. Read with an open mind, try it and see if it doesn't work for you too.

The volume shows how distinctive it was for one book to chronicle the history of three nations of the British archipelago.

The various sections of the Handbook analyze the making of the two editions of the Chronicles; the relationship of the work to medieval and early modern historiography; its formal properties, genres and audience; attitudes to politics, religion, and society; literary appropriations; and the parallel descriptions and histories of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. The result is a seminal study that shows unequivocally the vitality and complexity of the chronicle form in the late sixteenth century.

About the Author

Paulina Kewes is Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Jesus College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her research interests focus on early modern drama, politics, and historiography. She is the author of Authorship and Appropriation: Writing for the Stage in England, 1660-1710 (1998) and 'That Great Matter of Succession' and Elizabethan Political Culture (2012) and, editor or co-editor of Plagiarism in Early Modern England (2003), The Uses of History in Early Modern England (2006), and The Question of Succession in Late Elizabethan England (2013).

Ian W. Archer has been Fellow and Tutor in History at Keble College, Oxford since 1991. His primary research interests lie in the history of early modern London, and he has also published on history and memory. He is a Literary Director of the Royal Historical Society.

Felicity Heal is an Emeritus Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford. Her research interests lie in the religious history of Britain and Ireland during the Reformation, in the social history of the gentry, and in gift giving and reciprocity in early modern England. She has written extensively on all these subjects. She is consultant editor for the sixteenth-century section of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Incredible In Depth Study of Overlooked Classic

Many have heard of Holinshed's Chronicles but few have actually read any portion of them. They are best known as the sources for many of Shakespeare's plays, however they have rarely been studied in their own right. Through both this book and their website of The Holinshed Project, the editors from Oxford have brought this incredible work to light for the first time in centuries, making it clear that they should be studied in their own right by students of literature, history and historiography. Although the book is expensive, it is worth it for the serious scholar. More casual students may want to try first the Holinshed Project website, which contains the full text of both original versions of Holinshed's Chronicles (1577 and 1587) along with some representative "Working Papers" from the handbook. Try especially Paulina Kewes' "Narrative Historiography and the Rules of Succession" which completely changes the perspective on Elizabethan views of political issues (divine right of kings, etc.).

Du Bois is both novel and enlightening. Much more than a mere biography, this volume makes a substantial and valuable contribution to our understanding of the complex and often frustrating interactions between race, civil rights, and U.S. foreign policy in the post–World War II period. DeRoche has not only written a readable and perceptive biography of a key figure in recent American history, but a book that uses Young to examine crucial issues in both domestic and foreign affairs. this is a great introduction to the career of Young

This is a very readable biography of Andrew Young, focusing primarily on his work in foreign policy, and going through 2000. Since the focus is on foreign policy, other aspects are discussed less. In particular, there is very little written about any domestic/municipal policy work that Young did while he was the mayor of Atlanta (1981-1989), other than his work on the bid for the 1996 Olympics. Aside from that, this is a great introduction to the career of Young.

Definitely Worth Reading!

While this is a technical and fact-packed book it is still engaging and enjoyable to read. More importantly the content was thoroughly researched and thoughtfully written out. As far as reading level goes it is somewhat aimed at college classrooms and so it is dense- not really a fast, light read. Overall I feel like I learned a great deal from this book and so the effort that it took to read this book was worth it!

The grad. student perspective

You will often read that this is an excellent source. For creditability - I have a BS in Env. Engineering and am a candidate for a MS in Env. Engineering. If you are a graduate student in environmental/water resources engineering, this is a must have reference. Well written, quite a few example calculations, good information well conveyed with illustrations whenever applicable. This book will give you most information, very detailed on most, if not all water treatment topics. You can tell, I really like this book - mainly because without it, I would have had a much harder time in my unit processes/operations of water treatment course. As for real world application, I imagine it to be just as good. Afterall, it is written by well acknowledged, credited, experienced, and accepted professionals. Cheers.

The Authorative Water Treatment Text

The authors have taken a sound, but old text and added significant updates. The material is technically accurate; it has good depth of coverage; the formatting makes subjects easy to follow and specific information easy to locate; and the tables and figures are outstanding. It is well organized. The historical perspectives that occur in a number of chapters provide an dimension of knowledge that adds perspective to the technical coverage. I am a practicing professional environmental engineer and also teach environmental engineering design at Georgia Tech. I have made extensive use of this text as a reference in both capacities. Every water/wastewater treatment professional's library should include a copy of this text.

Huge text, but good. I still have it after working at a firm doing operations and maintenance. I enjoy taking a quick peak once in a while... recommend for professionals and students of Water Resources and Treatment.

Best Book On Leadership I've Ever Read

Finally, a book on leadership based on truth and real life experience! If you read business books and are tired of MBA speak, pick this up and learn what it really takes to persevere, to challenge ones self and most importantly -- to set an example. It is no wonder that the Army has produced some of the greatest leaders in history -- they are learning this stuff while most of us are still deciding which happy hour to hit.
I also like the way the book was organized. You learn first hand what it takes to succeed in a seemingly impossible set of physical, mental and emotional challenges. And you hear it directly from the Rangers themselves. The author then guides and offers advice on how to apply these same basic tenets to all aspects of your life.
I had no prior knowledge of the military or Rangers specifically. This book is also excellent for anyone contemplating joining special forces within the Armed Forces. The next time I see a soldier with a Ranger tab, I'll know that he put his heart, soul and mind on the line for 61 days and a better persepctive on what it took for him to survive.
I love Barber's No-Excuse method of leadership -- he's the kind of boss I'd enjoy working for.

Good stories

Most of this book is not about leadership. Instead, it is about what it is like to be an Army Ranger. I would say 15% of the book is dedicated to the subject of leadership in the Rangers.
The book hits not so much at the intellectual level, but at the emotions. It does a fine job of describing the ATTITUDE of Ranger leadership. Perhaps it is implying that leadership is mostly about winning attitude.
The book holds the reader with its tales of harsh training every Ranger must suffer. Its training is specifcially designed to push every Ranger to their physical and psychological limits, resulting in what appears to be a near death experience to most Rangers. I found it intriguing that Rangers lose sexual appetite during their brutal training because all they can think about is their basic survival (warmth, food, shelter, and overcoming pain) while successfully accomplishing their mission.

Highly Recommnded!

Author and Army Ranger Brace E. Barber shows you how to make adversity hit the deck and give you 20 push-ups. His lessons on becoming a great leader are simple - stop thinking of yourself, learn to think of others, lead by example, persist in the face of adversity and so forth - but the process by which Army Rangers learn those lessons is complex and fascinating. Barber gives you insight into the brutal training that heroes such as the late Pat Tillman, the NFL star-turned-Ranger, endure for the cause of freedom. Barber profiles ten Rangers who applied lessons from their training to overcome difficulties. Readers see the circumstances under which these lessons were imprinted and deployed. In an age when people offer excuses as readily as business cards, Rangers believe the way to succeed is to stop making excuses. That's a valuable lesson in business and life. We highly recommends this book to those leading others through the hazards of business.
