Rafal Kuc

Rafal Kuc is a born team leader and software developer. Currently, he is working as a consultant and a software engineer at Sematext Group, Inc., where he concentrates on open source technologies, such as Apache Lucene, Solr, Elasticsearch, and the Hadoop stack. He has more than 13 years of experience in various software branches―from banking software to e-commerce products. He is mainly focused on Java but is open to every tool and programming language that will make the achievement of his goal easier and faster. Rafal is also one of the founders of the solr.pl website, where he tries to share his knowledge and help people with their problems related to Solr and Lucene. He is also a speaker at various conferences around the world, such as Lucene Eurocon, Berlin Buzzwords, ApacheCon, Lucene Revolution, and DevOps Days. He began his journey with Lucene in 2002, but it wasn't love at first sight. When he came back to Lucene in late 2003, he revised his thoughts about the framework and saw the potential in search technologies. Then came Solr, and that was it. Marek Rogozinski is a software architect and consultant with over 10 years of experience. An indispensable book for professionals who manage and maintain Elasticsearch servers for a living

First off, a disclaimer for newbies: This book is meant for intermediate users of the Elasticsearch Server. Still, the book begins with a short but comprehensive introduction to the basic concepts used in document indexing, the various node types in Elasticsearch and the Apache Lucene library that powers Elasticsearch under the hood. The examples in the book are based on the premise that the user is running an online bookstore which is a powerful way to explore the possibilities offered by Elasticsearch. The examples are in JSON document format which should be familiar to any serious developer. The score of a query determines how well the document matches the input query. The scoring formula is explained using a
simple example to demonstrate how it works in practice. Query rewrite methods, filters and types of queries are explained in detail with a special focus on their performance impact. Simple use cases let the readers know when to use which query group. A new sandboxed scripting language called Groovy is introduced that enables on-the-fly calculation of document scores without compromising the security of the search server. Lucene expressions are also given a brief touch. Readers will enjoy the chapter on improving search suggestions which can make a real difference in the search experience of users. Plenty of examples in this chapter help to take the guesswork out of improving query relevance. Filtering garbage results and using term faceting to narrow down search results are discussed to give readers the power to tailor their websites according to their needs for maximum user satisfaction. Scaling to accommodate increasing demands requires the right amount of shards and replicas. Deciding this amount is explored with a practical routing example. Very useful book for ElasticSearch users

I've been using ElasticSearch professionally for over 6 months - our first version product using ElasticSearch has shipped this week!

Whilst it is fairly easy to get started with ElasticSearch, there are a lot of fundamental aspects to it (and its underpinnings) which can have a dramatic affect on using it. And, whilst there are some good examples, they tend to be fairly simplistic.

Up until I got this book I'd been (extensively!!) relying on Google. And whilst I've eventually managed to work out the answers, it took a lot of searching and therefore a lot longer than I'd have ideally liked. In addition, finding individual snippets on the web doesn't help with some of the broad knowledge.

I found this book to be an excellent guide to help me understand the underpinnings of ElasticSearch, and also helped me to make many improvements in my Google-aquired knowledge. I would recommend it to anyone how is spending any amount of time with ElasticSearch.

it is like standing on the shoulders of a giant

It is hard to underestimate the importance of the search nowadays. It probably even occurs without being noticed, but try to count how many times a day you tried to search for a product online, search through an online catalogue, an abbreviation or simply a weather forecast? Even a simple one page document or a webpage offers search capabilities (Ctrl-F). But have you ever wondered about how fast the search through Wiki is or how exact it is, even correcting your misspellings?

These and more elaborate searches are a product of very powerful software. Typically thanks the Lucene index, it is like standing on the shoulders of a giant, Solr and Elasticsearch are capable of scouting through a sea of documents and terms in milliseconds, boosting the most relevant results to the top helping human or robot deliver business insight, guide through darkness of overwhelming amounts of information to the decision or helping buy the correct product.

It becomes very obvious that these products encapsulate tons of advanced features and boast an array of capabilities, but sifting through the myriad of the features may at times become exhausting, and sure time consuming.

This is where the excellent technical literature as Mastering Elasticsearch 2nd Edition makes a lot of sense. Please note, this is the 2nd edition in a very short period of time (less than two years). What it means, there are two things. First, the book is very popular so the authors get a lot of support and demand for a sequel, second, the technology is evolving fast (~ 100 pages added). All these are good news and a confirmation that Elasticsearch is a mature yet promising technology that is here to stay. It will not be needless to state that this book is seen by the authors as a companion book to the Elasticsearch Server 2nd Edition that I did not read, but the authors stress out that it is a good idea to start from one.

The Mastering Elasticsearch book does feel like aiming at the search engineers, or those who already is involved in conceiving or using a product that will utilize the search capabilities of Elasticsearch. It is full of practical advice, insight and examples that are ranging from fine-tuning the searches to setting and properly configuring the cluster up. There is a chapter toward the end about how to crate plugins to any software project.

I liked the following parts in the book: boosting search scores, using Groovy as a scripting language, troubleshooting and speeding up performance.

Some knowledge of Java is assumed, but no special tooling or software is necessary to go through the book. But please be aware that you will type a lot of text, JSON specifically, so you may want an editor that has good support for JSON especially color highlighting e.g. the Eclipse JSON plugin. Groovy was used very lightly and all the examples were very eloquent.

On the missing thing part, I did not see any examples on how to execute geospatial searched event though it was mentioned that these are possible, and I was highly interested in it.

It does not reduce my score even a bit though, this is an example of a very hard work on the part of the authors and publisher, five our of five.

I had several business meetings with Americans and I understood everything, I mean everything they said. That didn't happen to me before using Whaddaya say?. I also learned to use reduced forms to improve my speed. But the most important thing is the almost magical change in my understanding. A suggestion is to follow carefully the instructions, then listen to each conversation and repeat it many times. The book is also great source of expressions and uses, not just reduced forms. Nina Weinstein has published twenty English language textbooks, including the fast program Vocabulary Tools for test preparation and vocabulary expansion. Best book on Relaxed Speech ever written

If you want to speak like a Native American, this book will be very useful to you. This is an excellent book which is very organized to cover each and every reduced form (wanna, gonna, gotta etc.) with lots of examples and exercises. This book covers pronunciation changes that occur in fast speech. The audio of this book is available at author’s website www.easyenglish.us.com I bought this book and downloaded the audio files from author’s web site. I have been finding it very useful and I love this book. There are 30 chapters in this book and you can quickly learn most of it if you listen to audio of each chapter while you study the chapters. I don’t think there is any other book available in market which covers Relaxed Speech anywhere close to the contents of "Whaddaya Say". I came to know that the author field tested "Whaddaya Say", at Harvard University where she worked as a teaching fellow. I recommend this book to those who want to speak like Native Americans. I think this book is worth the price and it is beyond comparison. I am impressed with the amount of research done by author to come up with this masterpiece.

Fast-Spoken English in a Fast-Moving World

Whaddya say is a practical book for serious-minded second language learners of English who want to communicate quickly in real world settings.
Formal English listening/speaking training in pre-college classrooms prepares students to carefully articulate prepared speeches, but it lacks in preparing English language learners to listen and respond to real world conversations in dynamic domains. Typical examples (although, not included in the present book) might include conversations that take place in the stock market and conversations between pilots and air traffic controllers. In both situations, the verbal component of communications is time sensitive. Nina Weinstein's book and tapes focus on enhancing listening and speaking skills using both slow and relaxed, fast-spoken English.
Nina Weinstein outlines the most commonly used reduced forms of English sounds in twenty short chapters, introducing the most simple reduced sounds (like you --> ya) to the more complex reduced sounds that are found in advanced grammatical structures (coulda, woulda, mighta).
Whaddaya say incorporates short, yet practical conversational exercises at the end of each chapter. The exercises require the Whaddaya say cassette tape. Completion of this book, accompanied with a professional ESL instructor, will result in an increased situational and linguistic awareness of the ESL learner's surroundings.

From the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright to the rock gardens of Zen Buddhism, Coleman explores applied, fine, and folk arts in order to uncover points of coalescence between art and religion. Drawing from six living faiths (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism), this book philosophically analyzes relations between art and religion in order to explain how the concepts "art," "beauty," "creativity," and "aesthetic experience" find their place or counterparts in religious discourse and experience. Coleman repeatedly shows that aesthetic ideas can serve as bridges to spiritual categories, as when he relates aesthetic bliss to "the peace that passes all understanding."

The author follows a three-fold approach; first, he examines ideas and motifs from religious classics in world literature, such as Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching and The Interior Castle by Teresa of Avila, in order to relate them to aesthetic phenomena. Second, he turns to the statements of artists, such as Leo Tolstoy, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Shih-t'ao, and Wassily Kandinsky, for themes and practices that have religious significance. Third, he analyzes and evaluates the writings of various theoreticians--philosophers, theologians, art critics, sociologists, and psychologists--on the relations between art and religion. Coleman demonstrates, for example, that Martin Buber's I-Thou relationship captures much that is central to art, creativity, and aesthetic experience as well as to religious life.

Among the themes that receive sustained treatment are: the varieties of union in art and religion, the child as a paradigm for artists and saints, and creativity as essential to religion. Finally, the author critically weighs proposed distinctions between art and religion and between the broader categories of the aesthetic and the spiritual, rejecting some and showing how others are compatible with his proposal that the aesthetic and the spiritual are cognate categories.

Earle J. Coleman is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the author of several books, including Varieties of Aesthetic Experience and Philosophy of Painting by Shih-t'ao.

Articulate and Mind-Opening

I rented this book from my university's library, intrigued by the title. Being both a highly passionate artist and a deeply spiritual person, I was immediately interested. I have always suspected that there were relations between artistic and religious acts, and author Earle J. Coleman expands on this theory, with a lot of illuminating, penetrating insight. He discusses that both art and religion involve a communication and inspiration from a divine source (possibly the same source) and that all artists and theologists should strive to remain in touch with that divinity in many ways, such as expressing your inner child (in order to be open, faithful, and nonjudgmental), being a receptive vessel for inspiration and creative energy, and setting aside shallow ego desires in order to be fully immersed in the creative/spiritual process. Coleman states that while he does not believe that art and religion are completely intertwined, he believes that the two subjects intermingle in many ways like the creative art and fables found in religions and churches, and the transformative, cathartic power of creative work. Reading this article renewed my passion and faith in my craft, as well as the enigmatic Higher Power that works through me in order to express that craft.

About the Author
Jody Houton is a UK-born journalist who has traveled extensively since leaving university, and lived and worked in several different countries before settling in Thailand. The expat experience, in particular, has enabled him to form an unbiased interpretation of the benefits and disadvantages of being a foreigner living and working in Thailand.

One of the Best Thailand Books I've Read (and I own a LOT of them!)

Over the years, I have purchased a number of books while in Thailand and thought I had just about everything. I wandered into Asia Books at Mega BangNa yesterday and after a quick glance through, decided to buy this book, which is quite up to date and relevant. It is well written, colorful and a pleasure to read. It covers just about everything an expat or annual visitor (like me) has encountered while in Thailand. Any book that has a reference to Si Ouey and some of the classic farang and Thai gaffes gets a definite seal of approval for authenticity. Whether you're a seasoned Thailand traveler or just discovering your way around, this is a great, contemporary book to have handy. Very enjoyable!

A scholarly book, well researched and written. A story of a clash of cultures - of "gown" versus "village". A book with a larger message about what happens when divergent cultures clash and fail to find common ground. And finally, a work that gives perspective on the need for better preservation of the NC coastal environment. Specifically, on how a 21 mile long North Carolina barrier island was transformed from its near pristine state in the 1920's to the very densely summer beach haven it is today.

The SAMPLE is Hilarious - then I read the rest of the book and it was boring and lost that edgy sense of humor that
was in the Sample. It's the 'Then I did this, then I did this, then I did this' redundancy.

candid & endearing

Not what I expected after reading every other comedian's memoir (Tina Fey, Michael Ian Black, Mike Birbiglia, Ellen, Paula Poundstone, Jane Lynch, Steve Martin...I'm addicted). I bought this mostly because I was curious about her romantic life and baby life, and she is someone whom the gossip mags basically ignore. Rachel Dratch satisfied all my curiosity with her candor, and she opened my eyes about why gossip mags ignore her. Because SHE IS A TOTALLY NORMAL PERSON! She is a talented and naturally funny person who has worked hard for whatever success she has in the NY and LA world, and she's faced totally weird and unfair criticisms. I enjoyed reading about her private dating life and her journey to motherhood. This book didn't blow my mind as far as comedian memoirs go, but it didn't disappoint either. She has a unique voice and doesn't name-drop or emphasize the Hollywood part of her life.

A "normal" celebrity? A relatable celebrity memoir? I didn't know it was possible.

I hate when people review a book and say, "I couldn't put it down!" because 9 times out of 10 they put the book down multiple times and took several weeks to finish it. That being said, I can honestly say I couldn't put Rachel Dratch's book down. When it arrived I opened it to read the first page just to get a feel for her writing style. My husband was waiting for me to run a few errands with him at the time but he ended up doing them alone and I camped out on my comfy chair in the living room and read the entire book. Given it is on the short end, I still couldn't put the thing down and read it in just a few hours on a perfectly beautiful, sunny day that probably should have been spent being productive.

I am not a fan of Celebrity Memoirs. Most celebrities are terrible writers and have to have someone else write the thing for them. Also, most celebrities are incredibly boring people (this shouldn't surprise anyone, but will). Rachel is a comic and has been writing her own material since she was a child and I found her style very entertaining and engaging. I was drawn to her book, despite my hatred of celebrity memoirs, because Rachel doesn't pretend to be someone she isn't. Fame hasn't gone to her head, she's a normal person who just happened to be on SNL for 7 seasons and pops up in movies. She is honest and tells her story of how hard making it in show business is and "making it" doesn't mean you've made it forever - it's constant work to remain active in her field.

The first half of Rachel's book mostly revolves around how she got started in the business, her time on SNL, what really went down with her starring role on 30 Rock, and her struggles with making it in film after leaving SNL. The second half of her book is about dating and searching for love? companionship? a baby daddy? she doesn't quite know, but the journey is one she takes anyway and is full of bumps, a jekyll and hyde dog, and humorous weirdos. This part of the book was especially raw and relatable - Rachel realizes for most of her life she has prevented herself from finding love by surrounding herself with her gay friends, marrieds, and work.

I think some celebrity memoirs could get quite boring after the "juicy" showbiz part, but Rachel's got better with every page. I hope she continues to write because there's nothing like the feeling of falling in love with a book.

I realize most reviewers refer to the author by last name, but I couldn't do that here. It seems to formal for someone that writes in a way that makes her reader her friend.

Great for those new to Pattaya

This was a good read. Well written with lots of details. It's the perfect guide for a newbie planning a trip to Pattaya. Out of the other Pattaya travel guides I've read, this was the most informative. I enjoyed his writing style and reading this book; although I didn't learn anything new for myself. I've spent too much time there for that. He goes into a lot of detail that others don't. Details that a new traveler would want to know before going.

Great Reference book

Great book for anyone intending to visit Pattaya. I wish I had found it before my first trip. Neil has described the town and the activities very well .Easy to follow with subjects well broken down into chapters. When I go back in a few weeks I will take this with me as a reference.

A Modern theory of the Morality of Capitalism

The author is both an historian and a political scientist. He, also, perhaps unwittingly, is a brilliant theorist. Because of the latter, this treatment of capitalism and slavery is a superb, comprehensive, dispassionate, critical and scholarly analysis of the invention and perpetuation of the English led industrial revolution, and the role slavery played as an inportant concomitant in carrying that revolution to completion.

In this regard, there is both a long and a short version of the story. The short version sticks most closely to his theory about the morality of capitalism, so it is only appropriate to give the short story in this review, which is this: Slavery and monopoly (mostly of sugar and cotton) powered the English led industrial revolution. Everything else is just cultural decoration, a tying up of all the moral loose ends very much after the fact, and building post hoc rationalizations for how (not why) slavery was engaged in. The why is already self-evident: It was done for profits and for no other reason. But slavery was its own economic closed system.

This gets us to the second part of the book, the amorality or moral innocence of economic processes. This is a theme that runs along side the narrative in the subtext. For my needs, this part of the book was perhaps the most important part. For like Charles Beard (in his fabulous book "An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the U.S."), this author also puts in the foreground the economic origins of many well-known social, political, and intellectual movements (including of course, the topic of this book, slavery). In doing so, he clears the air and resets the moral parameters for those who might want to deal exclusively in morally correct fantasies (like myself) when dealing with an issue as sensitive as slavery.

What he tells us here, with a kind of moral clarity that cannot be mistaken for anything else: is that every brick in Buckingham palace was cemented in Negro blood. But then he gives us a brutal lesson in the ethics of (or the lack of morality in) economics: Politics, economics and morals in the abstract make no sense. The infrastructure of political and economic systems are more important than their respective super-structures, and are more important than the ideological base that sustains them after the fact. This is not to say that morality and ideologies do not count or that all men are simply racist and thus venal. However, the chilling message of the book is one that we already knew from the bible: "Where your treasure is; there will your heart be also." That basically is the moral story of the European pursuit of slavery.

We thus tend to forget that the use of Negroes as slaves was not at first imposed by any Hitler-like racial doctrine. It was based on a simple economic calculus: Black slaves paid better than enslaved Indians, Irish or Scottish prisoners-of-war, or the use of indentured white servants more generally. Plus, and (this was the economic deal breaker, especially with the coming of the ban on the Atlantic slave trade), the children of Negro women were slaves in perpetuity. Slaves could be bought and sold; used to produce crops, and then perpetuate or replenish themselves(!). A black slave thus constituted a tight closed economic loop, out of which emerged free-standing profits, more capital, and the bonus: more slaves. End of story. Morality did not play a role here; it was purely economics in the raw. So long as the system was profitable, it was rationalized, defended, and praised. Justification for continuing it, became its own ideology and its own legitimacy.

The author's finely-tuned theory teaching us that the only thing that cannot be seen in hindsight is how economic forces tend to coalesce as they come into being with their own built in justifications. They do so gradually, almost imperceptibly, having an irresistible and cumulative effect that is difficult to reverse, once started. Morality takes a back seat when gradual processes emerge and when questionable economic practices are used to either feed the family, build a nation, or an empire. Drug trafficking is the perfect modern case in point. Moral reckoning can always be delayed and dealt with after the fact, when profits have run their course. Such was the case in both the slave trade of the 17th and 18th Century, and the drug trade of today. The warning of this book is a morally sobering one: Capitalist profits always try to bring with them, their own moral legitimacy. We see it again in the 2006 Housing crash based on a greedy Wall Street Ponzi scheme.

The longer story of the slave trade, we already know: its origin and development, the Atlantic triangulation, the coming of the American revolution and the development of British capitalism. But here we begin to understand how slavery so easily got under the moral radar of a European world full of religious Puritans claiming to be struggling for their own freedom. Five Stars

The basic theory underlying Eric Williams's Capitalism and Slavery is that slavery in the colonies, particularly the West Indies so far as this analysis is concerned, brought about capitalism, and thereby led to its own decline.

The first five chapters of the book explain the nature of British economics prior to the American Revolution. Synthesizing information rather than expressing his own view, Williams discusses triangular trade among England, the African coast, and the slave-holding colonies. In essence, England exported goods and ships, Africa exported slaves, and the colonies exported slave-produced raw materials.

American independence destroyed the mercantilist scheme of triangular trading. The ex-colonies now had no incentive to trade with the West Indies at their monopoly prices, instead turning to French islands for their sugar, at considerably lower prices. Consequently, British businessmen were no longer interested in giving economic protection to the West Indies because doing so without mainland North America would cost them money. One basic tenet of Adam Smith's capitalism is that business should be efficient and profitable, and monopolies simply were neither. The laissez-faire approach, or Smith's "invisible hand," meant eliminating monopolies and letting economics take its course.

During this time the Industrial Revolution also occurred, generating new machinery, most notably Watt's steam engine, and simplifying the extraction of raw materials. Ironworks were now much more efficient, for example, as was the process of turning wool into useable cloth. These advantages put Great Britain in a position to economically dominate the world. During this time also Spanish colonies in South America began breaking away from Spain, opening up vast regions for British trade. Similarly, Asia became a possibility for a wide variety of goods, most notably, in the scope of Williams' book, East Indian sugar. All these opportunities and Britain's economic superiority culminated in the end of monopolistic practices.

Slavery had precipitated these developments by generating fantastic wealth through triangular trading; without slavery, that trade scheme would not have existed. Once these developments came to pass, however, slavery proved itself largely pass?. Without the monopoly on West Indian sugar, slave trading became substantially less profitable. At the same time, when the American mainland split from Great Britain, suddenly Britain was no longer dependent on slavery for economic success, but instead could be a global distributor for goods. Furthermore, abolitionists in England gave cry to the crime of slavery, since they were no longer directly dependent on it, and eventually Britain banned the slave trade.

Williams's analysis is interesting and well worth reading. That said, his assertion that slavery declined is only partly true; it was alive and well in the southern United States. Furthermore, while Williams claims slavery brought about triangular trading, which in turn brought about the Industrial Revolution, one wonders if slavery simply expedited the arrival of the Industrial Revolution. Finally, he focuses to a significant extent on British humanitarianism in ending slavery; cynically, one must consider the relevance of slavery to those humanitarians, and how many there were after the Industrial Revolution.

Ground breaking economic history--and support for reparation

The transformation from subsistance society where everyone more or less consumed what they produced, to international capitalism required as a precondition the accumulation of capital. That is, some people had to be able to produce more than they consumed before they could have anything to invest.
Williams contribution to the literature of this transformation is to focus on the role of the slave trade. On the one hand, it provided a source of raw materials (human beings) which could be sold at a profit by traders, and then used to produce even more wealth by the buyers (slaveholders). This double accumulation of wealth went a long way toward allowing a few very wealthy people to accumulate capital, which coul;d then be invested in things like machinery.
At the same time, the slave trade provided an economic foundation for a large scale international trading network (the famous molasses, slave, rum triangle, later includeing cotton). Without this international network of shippers and merchants, the English (and later New England) cotton mills would not have had anywhere to sell their manufactured product (cotton cloth), nor a cheap source of cotton to use as raw materials.
Williams' ground breaking contirbution was to link all of this together, and argue that without the immoral slave trade, the industrial revolution, and thus capitalism as we know it, would not have happened. The inescapable conclusion is that since much of modern wealth was founded on slavery, some form of reparations is warranted.
