Genuine Japanese Origami, Book 2: 34 Mathematical Models Based Upon (the square root of) 2 (Dover Origami Papercraft), by Jun Maekawa, Ori

Unique and wildly creative, this mathematical approach to origami was invented by a Japanese master of the art. Jun Maekawa regards paperfolding from a perspective guided by geometric and aesthetic principles. In this captivating how-to book, he illustrates his point of view with directions for constructing 34 fabulous items, including cubes, towers, and geometric shapes as well as puzzles and figures of everyday items.
This is the first publication outside Japan of these original models, offering advanced beginners and serious origamists a combination of simple and complex figures and an intriguing blend of art and science. Rather than the square-shaped paper familiar to American folders, all models employ rectangular sheets of paper — that is, sheets with an aspect ratio of 1:1.41, or 1:√2. Instructions for making rectangular origami paper are included.

One one square root of two
By Joseph A. Dudar
These models are all challenging but rewarding and educational. Diagrams and explanations are clear and thorough. This book builds interpretation and performance skills, but it requires a degree of dedication. Absolute beginners may find many of the models very difficult.

Consider buying A4 paper rather than cutting USA paper to size.

Rare book on rectangular,A4 dimensions or silver rectangle size paper
By Michael Clonaris
You get some great origami in this beautiful book with the most helpful diagrams you could imagine.I wish Western origamists would study diagram making from the Japanese as they have a lot to learn.Jun Maekawa is renown for his difficult origami but this book as most of his other books begins with easy Origami progressively getting more difficult.
All the designs are based on the silver rectangle or 1:square root 2.as always in good origami books the two sides of the paper are made clear by the use of white and grey.A great little essay on rectangular papers through the ages up until now round off this most excellent of Origami books. This book would be very handy for people who do not have access to square paper but can get their hands on computer size document paper.

Very well written with advanced origami figures
By JerryA
Interesting unusual origami models. Well written and clear, but do note many of these are complex foldings. Many of the geometric figures do use several sheets of paper which is characteristic of these types of models.

The tales in this book have remained hidden. First there's the story of renegade Indian guide Simon Girty, called "the white savage," who was despised by the Americans during the Revolutionary War and nearly murdered by Joseph Brant. There's the story of Tecumseh's mysterious burial. There's what happened when industrialist Hiram Walker tried to sell a cow, and was embroiled in a court battle taught to this day in American law schools; there's Lincoln's one visit to Windsor; there's a gun-slinging Chatham mail coach, a wrestler who chewed light bulbs in public, and a freak electrocution that killed a young man en route to the NHL. Weird, wonderful, told by the city's most popular historian, The Other Side of My Town is Windsor like you've never seen it before.

Letters to Kurt, by Eric Erlandson

"Nearly two decades after the death of Kurt Cobain, a friend and fellow musician not only continues to mourn his suicide, but also rages against the culture that he holds responsible. These 52 'letters' . . . combine the subject matter of the Byrds' 'So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star' with the fury of Allen Ginsberg's Howl . . . A catharsis for the writer and perhaps for the reader as well."
--Kirkus Reviews

"A touching and enlightening collection of prose poems addressed to [Erlandson's] departed friend."
--The San Francisco Bay Guardian

"Erlandson finally comes to terms with his loss in 52 prose-poem letters ostensibly addressed to Cobain in which he straightforwardly confronts his inner demons while offering personal reflections on food, drug abuse, death, and self-sabotage."--Booklist

"The reverberations of Kurt's suicide last to this day, and have touched the lives of many. Dozens of people could have written their own version of this bracingly candid book; Eric Erlandson has written one, filled with rage and love, landmined with detail, that can stand for them all."
--Michael Azerrad, author of Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana

"Eric was the spirit-boy in the Nirvana/Hole dynamic. Quiet, bemused, intelligent, and curiously intuitive to the power of hugging the devil, to say we will all be okay . . . Eric expresses how enchanting Kurt was, how the whole scene was, with his thoughtful, radical adult/prose love. Bring on the future, darling."--Thurston Moore, musician

"Eric. He was always there: supportive, observing, in the thick of it. Hidden in plain sight . . . Without him, I can't imagine Seattle or L.A. or a dozen other places. This book is beautiful, brutal, brief. Happy-sad eloquence. Boy Scouts playing with the complimentary cologne in the heart of the ghost town. Listen to the man. He knows."
--Everett True, author of Nirvana: The Biography

Letters to Kurt is an anguished, angry, and tender meditation on the octane and ether of rock and roll and its many moons: sex, drugs, suicide, fame, and rage. It's part Dream Songs, part Bukowski, Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg, and the Clash. Rants, reflections, and gunshot fill these fifty-two prose poems. They are raw, funny, sad, and searching. This will make a beautiful book for anyone who loved Nirvana and Hole and the time and place when their music changed everything. Ultimately, it's an elegy for Kurt and the "suicide idols" who tragically fail to find salvation in their amazing music.

From Booklist
Erlandson is known as the cofounder, songwriter, and lead guitarist of the rock band Hole, but he has performed in the shadows of his more famous, and infamous, colleagues and friends, especially Kurt Cobain, the iconic lead singer of the premier grunge band, Nirvana, who committed suicide at the height of his fame, and Courtney Love, Erlandson’s former girlfriend and Hole bandmate. As it turns out, Hole released their debut album, Pretty on the Inside, a week before the release of Nirvana’s behemoth best-seller Nevermind. Within a month, notes Erlandson, Love and Cobain were a couple. From then on, Erlandson assumed “a sort of friend/caretaker role,” serving as both Cobain’s sounding board and morale booster even as he felt pangs of “subconscious jealousy.” In addition to Cobain, other friends and associates of Erlandson’s self-destructed during a relatively short period of time. Erlandson finally comes to terms with his loss in 52 prose-poem letters ostensibly addressed to Cobain, in which he straightforwardly confronts his inner demons while offering personal reflections on food, drug abuse, death, and self-sabotage. --June Sawyers

Prematurely Published
By Charlotte
I love Hole and really admire anyone who could cowrite all of those great songs, especially from the pissed-off punk of Live Through This & the lighter but maybe even angrier Celebrity Skin. So, Bravo Eric Erlandson the songwriter/guitarist. Sadly, this book is by the less talented Eric Erlandson the prose writer, a person who seems to have a lot of ideas but no strong guide to give them form. Akashic, the publisher, did him no favors by allowing this book into print at this stage. There are things here that should never have made it into an adult's final draft of anything. For instance, raw yogurt upsets Erlandson's stomach, seitan makes him constipated (as do a long list of other foods), and Erlandson has hugged someone hard enough to be "at the risk of pooping" (111). Fascinating as all this might be to Erlandson's gastroenterologist, as his reader I'm not just uninterested but left wondering at the poverty of a mind that goes on and on about such things. Oh, also, he lets us in on ejaculating on some woman's stomach and giving another woman (the same woman?) three orgasms in one morning "by accident" (45). Yeah, I don't get that last one either.

The more interesting parts of Letters to Kurt are just uncomfortable. He trashes Courtney Love almost obsessively. She's too easy a target and the things he says seem more in place in a Kitty Kelley biography. Some of his musings on Kurt are interesting, many unintelligible. Once he verges on beautiful: "I found a picture of you back when your saddest days were the happy days of my life" (122).

Unfortunately much of the rest of the book is written like this: "My definite chief aim in life is to give a lecture at Harvard on the female anatomy as it relates to the benefits of adding nicotine to ice cream" (33). Here's a longer sample: "No, I didn't forget to turn out the lights. Maybe 'cause she's a missionary and I'm anal. Her post-partum to my pre-verbal. Keep confusing the tush for the bush. Spare ribs" (65). If Akashic had any integrity, they would have assigned Erlandson an experienced editor, recommended he heavily workshop these pieces, and wait for a polished manuscript. What they published instead is just sad.

About a boy.
By kika
This book reads, no smears, like a slice of the most juicy, self-analytical dear diary that Jung himself would blush at. It is intensely private look into the mind of a musician-cum-writer, who used to be in one of the most well known "grunge" bands of the 90's, the band HOLE. Erlandson's side of the story has always been quiet, but any of those who kept up with any of the press about the time, know that he was in the eye of the heroin chic hurricane; often portrayed as the shy, quiet one, a silent observer of sorts, maybe having to do with his Buddhist background or maybe it's just his personality. Either way it served him in terms of how well he conveyed rather saliently what it smelled like to be there, to be the one conjured in memory. As the writer dances ambiguously through time, we as the reader don't know when he is speaking of Courtney Love or Kurt Cobain, if it is in present day, but it doesn't really matter, since the syntax is so lyrically produced. Your eyes seem to hear the song that he is writing. He has stated that he is heavily influenced by John Berryman and Jim Harrison...to quote a line from Berryman,

"He knows:
he went over everyone, & nobody's missing.
Often he reckons, in the dawn, them up.
Nobody is ever missing."

It sums up the thematic of the 90s, nobodies making music about nothing about something about nothing that meant everything.

I dug the book, it's akin to a piece of literary art, it's not a tell-all, it's not a "lemme read this to the kids". It is singular and sincere, all signs of a good read to me, worth the purchase indeed.Letters to Kurt

Candid, Confusing, and Conscious
By Dollscares
Eric's prose makes me think. It makes me "kill my idols" but also reincarnate them into human beings. I highly recommend this to any Hole fan, Nirvana fan, or anyone young person like myself who got stuck with boomer parents and tends to romanticize gen x's alt nation without looking at its context. It's so refreshing to get to hear Eric's side of things without the media filter or glitz. Not living inside Eric's head, some of the metaphors don't make sense to me but they clearly show a stream of consciousness.

This essential, fun, insightful guide to living and loving will help you navigate the complexities of modern society's myriad nontraditional relationships.

With nearly 50 percent of marriages ending in divorce, a growing percentage of women over age forty choosing not to have children, and more than 3 percent of the population identifying as LGBT, modern life is clearly in need of some modern relationship advice. Sex from Scratch analyzes the facets of contemporary relationships through the struggles, opinions, and experiences of a diverse group of individuals living in nontraditional relationships. Rather than telling readers how to snag a partner and find ''true love,'' it gleans real-life knowledge from people of all sexualities and genders - including individuals trying to make open relationships work to those who have opted against having children - distilling their hard-earned wisdom. Contributions from Andi Zeisler, Stu Rasmussen, Betty Dodson, and others make this love and dating guidebook an essential, fun, and insightful resource for anyone in any type of relationship.

We Need More Books Like This
By Dan Copulsky
First off, this book includes an awesome collection of interviews. I was particularly excited for to see contributions from three great sex educators, Tristan Taormino, Wendy-O Matik, and Betty Dodson, and awesome comic artist Erika Moen.

The book is broken into seven chapters. Each of these chapters contains practical advice for navigating relationships. Most of these chapters also challenge the view that relationships should all progress in the same direction, towards an exclusive permanent marriage with children.

Loving Being Single suggests that you don't need to be in a relationship to be happy. Navigating Non-Monogamy tackles the idea that exclusivity is always preferable. Staying Childless by Choice takes on the pressure for everyone to have kids. On Never Getting Married discusses the reasons for not forming a legal union. And Knowing When To Split faces how sometimes ending a relationships is the best option.

Two chapters are a bit different. Building Feminist Relationships and Gender is Messy contend with gender roles and gender identity, and look for positive ways to take on gender issues to build positive relationships.

We need more books like this. We need more books that acknowledge that one kind of relationship doesn't work for everyone, and that people can define relationships on their own terms. And we just need more books that talk about non-monogamy, not getting married, and not having kids.

We need more books that incorporate feminism into advice for daily life too. We need more books that examine how to have positive, progressive relationships. We need more books that challenge how we conduct intimate relationships in critical ways. And we need more books that do all that with honesty, sincerity, and humor.

My biggest complaint about the book is the territory it doesn't explore. The introduction makes passing references to asexuality and kink, but I'd like to hear more. I'd like to hear more about other ways people buck relationships conventions too, like couples that decide to keep separate residences or spend more time apart.

I also wish it examined more of the ways these topics overlap, like the options for raising children within a nonmonogamous relationship, or specific challenges of not being married if you do have kids. And I wish the book looked closer at where taking these less common routes made it harder or easier to build feminist relationships.

There's so much this book didn't cover, but that's not really a flaw. There's a lot it does include, and it builds groundwork that could lead to more. As I said, we need more books like this.

A book I'll be talking about with people for years to come
By adam
This book is amazing! I've never read anything like it. Get five copies of it so you can share.

Mirk has a gift for asking questions that lead to productive conversations. I can't imagine a better quality for a writer to bring to a book exploring present-day relationships.

Sex from Scratch is honest without being didactic from the very first paragraph: "Look, I don't know what I'm doing. Most advice books are written by people who say they're experts and they sell you on the notion that there are secrets inside that will transform your life. I have to tell you some bad news: I'm no expert. There are no secrets here. Only you can change your life. Sorry."

The blend of Mirk's openness with the "good insights, practical advice, and admissions of honest mistakes" in the book's interviews engaged me in a way that slipped right past my defenses. I was having loads of insights and conversations before I was halfway through.

Through interviews and personal reflection, the book touches on many facets of "making your own relationship rules"-- popular relationship narratives, building feminist relationships, the value of taking care of yourself, navigating non-monogamy, marriage, gender, and much more.

I'd love to give this book to a parent or kid just starting to talk about relationships, because it's straightforward and empowering. It's clear that Mirk wants the best for her readers and sees information and communication as the best ways to get there.

Regardless of who you are (or aren't) and where you are (or aren't) in a relationship, this book will give you tools, models, and conversation points to better understand relationships and move forward intentionally.

A breath of fresh air
By felis notatus
Because it's not clear from my user name, I'm a woman. Born in 1969, for age perspective relative to the various waves of feminism. I have indeed been forging my own relationship rules for some time, but I have come up against some trying times with regards to sexism in my marriage even though my husband and I have gone to lengths to craft a meaningful, unconventional relationship according to our rules. Reading other women's very thoughtful, not-at-all-kneejerk reflections on the sexism in their relationships lifted a huge weight off my shoulders that I hadn't even realized was there. I'm very grateful for this book, typos notwithstanding.

Plagues & Poxes, by Dr. Alfred Bollet MD, Alfred Jay MD

"Since publication of the initial version of Plagues & Poxes in 1987, which had the optimistic subtitle "The Rise and Fall of Epidemic Disease," the rise of new diseases such as AIDS and the deliberate modification and weaponization of diseases such as anthrax have changed the way we perceive infectious disease.

With major modifications to deal with this new reality, the acclaimed author of Civil War Medicine: Challenges and Triumphs has updated and revised this series of essays about changing disease patterns in history and some of the key events and people involved in them. It deals with the history of major outbreaks of disease - both infectious diseases such as plague and smallpox and noninfectious diseases - and shows how they are in many cases caused inadvertently by human actions, including warfare, commercial travel, social adaptations, and dietary modifications. To these must now be added discussion of the intentional spreading of disease by acts of bioterrorism, and the history and knowledge of those diseases that are thought to be potential candidates for intentional spread by bioterrorists.

Among the many topics discussed are:

  • How the spread of smallpox and measles among previously unexposed populations in the Americas, the introduction of malaria and yellow fever from Africa via the importation of slaves into the Western hemisphere, and the importation of syphilis to Europe all are related to the modern interchange of diseases such as AIDS.

  • How the ever-larger populations in the cities of Europe and North America gave rise to "crowd diseases" such as polio by permitting the existence of sufficient numbers of non-immune people in sufficient numbers to keep the diseases from dying out.

How the domestication of animals allowed diseases of animals to affect humans, or perhaps become genetically modified to become epidemic human diseases.

  • Why the concept of deficiency diseases was not understood before the early twentieth century disease, after all, was the presence of something abnormal, how could it be due to the absence of something? In fact, the first epidemic disease in human history probably was iron deficiency anemia.

  • How changes in the availability and nature of specific foods have affected the size of population groups and their health throughout history. The introduction of potatoes to Ireland and corn to Europe, and the relationship between the modern technique of rice milling and beriberi, all illustrate the fragile nutritional state that results when any single vegetable crop is the main source of food.

  • Why biological warfare is not a new phenomenon. There have been attempts to intentionally cause epidemic disease almost since the dawn of recorded history, including the contamination of wells and other water sources of armies and civilian populations of course, the spread of smallpox to Native Americans during the French and Indian War is known to every schoolchild. With our increased technology, it is not surprising that we now have to deal with problems such as weaponized spores of anthrax.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Alfred Jay Bollet is a distinguished academic rheumatologist who has chaired the department of medicine at two medical schools. The first edition of Plagues and Poxes, published in 1987, focused on the waxing and waning of specific diseases and their impact on world history. Half of that edition was organized around the status of medicine as illustrated by the treatment of U.S. presidents or their family members. This new edition devotes more space to noncontagious diseases and traces the effect of historical events, in particular the use of diseases as terrorist weapons and the modern potential for such uses. Eleven chapters are either major or minor revisions of those in the first edition, and six chapters are entirely new. The writing is for a general readership, with explanations of the rather few anatomical terms and other technical references. The content is presented in an interesting fashion, with numerous bits of obscure information scattered throughout, often with a relevance that is more historical than medical. For example, the chapter on yellow fever relates that during the famous charge up San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War, Colonel Teddy Roosevelt was the only rider. The price of Scotch whiskey increased during the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic because of a belief that the drink had therapeutic value. Regarding poliomyelitis, we learn that during Franklin Roosevelt's numerous railway journeys, the speed of the train was limited to 35 miles per hour to minimize his discomfort from the vibration of the car. "Spring fever" originated as a term of American colonists for the scurvy-induced lassitude that set in after a winter without fresh fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, I cannot determine the basis for some dubious statements because specific references are not given. For instance, bubonic plague was not called the Black Death in the 14th century but, rather, "the great mortality." "Black Death" came into use in 16th-century Scandinavia and was used in England in the 17th century. And, the author claims, "venereal urethritis . . . was known at least two millennia before syphilis appeared," even though no ancient description of involuntary urethral discharge mentions pain, making the diagnosis of gonorrhea doubtful before an English description in the 14th century. Also, the book states that "in 1831 . . . John Snow published a report suggesting that cholera was being spread by contaminated water," despite the fact that Snow would have made this report at the age of 18 years; it usually is dated to 1849. "The Ebers papyrus . . . recorded the effectiveness of extracts of the autumn crocus (the source of colchicine) for treating arthritis" is an unlikely statement that might have resulted from confusion between saffron (the dried stigma of Crocus sativus), which is believed to have appeared in the Ebers papyrus (although not in association with arthritis), and the bulb of another crocus, Colchicum autumnale, the source of colchicine. Names sometimes appear inconsistently, such as "Dr. Karl Landsteiner and his assistant, E. Popper" (Erwin), and the virologist Flexner's first name (Simon) should have been given to avoid confusion with his equally famous brother, Abraham. Of the rather few typographic errors, the most serious appears in a reference to Bacterial and Mycotic Infections of Man, supposedly edited by "Dubois, RJ" and published in 1848; Rene Jules Dubos actually published this book in 1948. Eighteen illustrations, all accompanied by descriptive text, are a new feature of this edition. References are given at the end of each chapter, mostly to secondary sources, and the index is adequate. Although not authoritative, Plagues and Poxes is entertaining and concisely offers much information that is not easily available. Thomas G. Benedek, M.D.

Dry Prose with Poor Additions
By Timothy Haugh
The "M.D." stands prominently after the author's name on the cover of this book and that's probably for a good reason: this text would fit better in the pages of a medical journal then as a book for public consumption. As a reader with a science background (albeit in physics) I am always ready to read a new science book. I also have an interest in the study of disease, particularly as it relates to the historical development of the human race. Still, this book was a disappointment.

Consider the following passage from the chapter on anthrax: "Most naturally occurring anthrax strains are sensitive to penicillin, which historically has been the preferred anthrax therapy. Doxycycline is the preferred option among the tetracycline class of agents, because it has been proved efficacious in monkey studies. Other members of this class of antibiotics are suitable, and animal studies suggest that such prophylaxis should be effective. The floroquinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin [Cipro])should have equivalent efficacy, but no data are available..." Not only is this dull prose, it is unimportant to the thread of the story that Dr. Bollett claims he is telling. And this is only one of the most prominent examples of poor prose (besides making me wonder whether or not Dr. Bollett has any financial interest in Cipro).

According to the introduction, this book is a revised edition to an earlier book on the same subject. I didn't read the first edition but I have a feeling it is much better than this book. Mainly because the last three chapters on emerging diseases are the poorest in the book and are probably new to this addition. As are what I expect are new paragraphs near the end of every chapter that relates how every single disease in history could be weaponized. It is disturbing to see a book like this play on people's fears of bioterrorism.

It's unfortunate because the historical sections of the book which are the bulk of the first parts of each chapter are well done if a bit dry. Dr. Bollett has turned the traditional view around a bit by considering how human history has impacted epidemic disease rather than the other way around. If the book had stayed on this path it would have been decent, if not great. Somehow this new edition has lost its way.

Charts the rise and changing of disease patterns
By Midwest Book Review
The impact of human history on epidemic disease is related in Dr. Bollett's Plagues And Poxes, an excellent medical-based survey which charts the rise and changing of disease patterns throughout human history. From key events which sparked changes and people involved in them to how inflections diseases have been stopped, Plagues And Poxes provides both a case history and a social analysis, written by a medical doctor who has been a member of many prestigious medical history societies.

Like the earlier editions of Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing, the new seventh edition is in part a carefully chosen anthology. Most of the works here are by American, British, and Canadian authors, but there are also a number of ancient and medieval writers, along with writers who lived in or came from France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Ceylon, and Indonesia, together with authors who represent backgrounds of Latino, American Indian, and Chinese culture. In total, 304 authors are represented, including ten anonymous authors. One hundred eighty-four of the authors—roughly sixty percent—were born after 1900. Of the eighty writers born since 1935, forty-two are women, or fifty-two percent. If one counts only the number of authors born after the end of World War II (1945), the percentage of women goes up dramatically to seventy percent.

The book includes a total of 505 separate works—sixty-two stories, 423 poems, and twenty plays and scenes. Each work is suitable for discussion either alone or in comparison. Ten stories, thirty-seven poems, and two dramas are new in this edition. For purposes of comparison, the works in two genres by a number of writers are included—specifically Atwood, Crane, Glaspell, Hughes, Poe, Shakespeare, Updike, and Walker. In addition, Faulkner and Munro are each represented by two stories, and Shakespeare and Ibsen are represented by two plays—Shakespeare in Chapters 27 and 28, and Ibsen in Chapter 31. There are four stories by Edith Wharton in Chapter 11, the chapter on the career in fiction. There are multiple selections of poems by many poets.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE SEVENTH EDITION

FLEXIBILITY. The seventh edition reaffirms a principle to which Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing is dedicated—flexibility. The earlier editions have been used for introduction-to-literature courses, genre courses, and both composition and composition-and-literature courses. Adaptability and flexibility have been the keys to this variety. Instructors can use the book for classroom discussions, panel discussions, essay or paragraph-length writing and study assignments, and special topics not covered in class.

FICTION. The fiction section consists of ten chapters. Chapter 2 is a general introduction to fiction while Chapters 3-10—the "topical" chapters central to each section of the book—introduce students to such important topics as structure, character, point of view, and theme. Chapter 11 consists of four stories by Edith Wharton, and Chapter 12 contains seven stories for additional study and enjoyment.

Readers will note that some of the new stories are classic—like those by Faulkner, Petronius, Chekhov, and Wharton—and some, such as those by Munro and Bradbury, are well on their way to becoming classic. The new stories complement the fifty-two stories, such as those by Carver, Crane, Glaspell, Gilman, Hawthorne, Joyce, Laurence, Porter, and Twain, that are retained from the sixth edition.

POETRY. The thirteen poetry chapters are arranged similarly to the fiction chapters. Chapter 13 is introductory. Chapters 14-23 deal with topics such as diction, symbolism, imagery, tone, and myth. Chapter 24 is the poetic careers chapter, consisting of selections by Wordsworth, Dickinson, and Frost. Chapter 25 contains 129 poems for additional study and enjoyment. Brief biographies of the anthologized poets are included in Appendix II to make the poetry section parallel with the drama and fiction sections.

Poetry selections are taken from poets of late medieval times to those of our own day, including poets such as the anonymous writer of "Sir Patrick Spens," Wyatt, Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Donne, Dryden, Pope, Gray, Wordsworth, Byron, Keats, Tennyson, Rossetti, Hopkins, Pound, Yeats, Eliot, Layton, Lowell, Brooks, Birney, and Clifton. Thirty-seven poems are new here. They represent a variety of American and British poets, most of whom are widely recognized. Agizeros, Carruth, Collins, Creeley, Davison, Dunn, Griffin, Kinnell, Merriam, Stevenson, and Terranova come readily to mind. Two of the poets were American presidents (Jimmy Carter and Abraham Lincoln). Younger poets, most of them with great distinctions to their credit, are Agueros, Edelman, Harjo, Hospital, and Peacock. One of the poets new in the seventh edition is Micheal O'Siadhail (pronounced me-hall oh-sheel), who has achieved distinction not only for his poetry but also for his governmental service in his native Ireland. Of special note is the inclusion for the first time of a number of nineteenth-century poets who were chosen for poems illustrating various aspects of American life. (Please see the first category in the Topical and Thematic Table of Contents). These are Bryant, Emerson, Ingham, Lincoln, Melville, and Whinier. Along with the poems included for the first time, the seventh edition of Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing retains 386 poems that were included in the sixth edition.

DRAMA. In the drama section Chapter 26 is introductory. Chapters 27 through 29 deal with tragedy, comedy, and realism and nonrealism. At the suggestion of a number of instructors who use film in their courses—a unique feature begun in the third edition—Chapter 30, on film, is retained, and the discussion matches those in the other chapters. The scenes from Citizen Kane, by Welles and Mankiewicz, and The Turning Point, by Laurents, have been retained. Chapter 31 is the special career chapter on Henrik Ibsen. There is no "Plays for Additional Study and Enjoyment" chapter to match Chapters 12 and 25 because most plays are so lengthy that adding more would extend the book beyond reasonable limits within a one-volume format.

Nine of the longer plays from the previous edition have been kept in this edition because they.are important in an introductory study of drama (Oedipus the King, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Love Is the Doctor, Death of a Salesman, The Glass Menagerie, Mulatto, A Dollhouse, An Enemy of the People). To this number, the important medieval The Second Shepherds'Play and Welder's perennially popular Our Town have been added. These additions make the anthology more useful than in the past as the basis for a discussion of the history of dramatic literature. In an anthology of this scope, the seven short plays (Am I Blue, The Bear, Before Breakfast, Tea Party, The Visitatio Sepulchre, The More the Merrier, Trifles) are valuable because they may be covered in no more than one or two classroom hours, and also because they may be enlivened by having parts read aloud and acted by students. Indeed, the anonymous Visitatio Sepulchre and Keller's Tea Party are brief enough to permit classroom reading and discussion in a single period.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

CONTENTS. The Contents lists all the works and major discussion heads in the book. A new feature is the inclusion, following each entry, of a sentence containing a brief summation or impression of the work. It is hoped that these "guides" will interest students in approaching, anticipating, and reading the works.

TOPICAL AND THEMATIC TABLE OF CONTENTS. To make the seventh edition of Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing as flexible as possible, we have continued the Topical and Thematic Table of Contents. In this table, located immediately following the chapter-by-chapter Contents, a number of topics are provided, such as Hope and Renewal; Women; Men; Women and Men; Conformity and Rebellion; Endings and Beginnings, Innocence and Experience, and Race, Ethnicity, and Nationality. Under these topics, generous numbers of stories, poems, and plays are listed (many in a number of categories), to aid in the creation and study of topical or thematic units. In this edition, for the first time, references to the works of art in the Inserts are included along with the topics so that students may add visual references to their analyses of literature.

A special word is in order for the category "America in Peace, War, and Tribulation," which is first in the Topical and Thematic Table. After the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, it is fitting that a category of uniquely American topics be included for student analysis and discussion. Of course there cannot be a systematic and comprehensive examination of the background and thought that belongs to courses in American literature, but a selection of works that bear on American life and values is now particularly important. Some of the works describe an idealized America, but many also shed light on problems and issues that America has faced in the past and is facing today. A few of the works concern our country at its beginning; some reflect the life of the frontier and the Civil War; others introduce issues of minority culture; still others introduce subjects such as war, misfortune, personal anguish, regret, healing, reverence for the land, the symbolic value of work, nostalgia, love, prejudice, and relationships between parents and children. It is our hope that students study the listed works broadly, as general human issues also dealing with the complexity of life in the United States today.

QUESTIONS. Following each anthologized selection in the detailed chapters are study questions designed to help students in their exploration and understanding of literature. Some questions are factual and may be answered quickly. Others provoke extended thought and classroom discussion, and may also serve for both in-class and out-of-class writing assignments. At the ends of twenty-six chapters we include a number of more general "Special Topics for Writing and Argument about (Character, Symbolism, Tragedy, etc.)." Many of these are comparison-contrast topics, and a number of them—at least one in each chapter—are assignments requiring creative writing (for example, "Write a poem," or "Compose a s...

Excellent textbook contains excellent collection of short stories.
By homeowner, N. CA
I bought this as a college textbook and decided to keep it on my bookshelf.
The paperback is both a collection of short stories and a very informative guide to college level English 1A and 1B or 101 and 102 critical thinking and writing of papers.

Teach it, learn it, experience it, love it
By Mary-Jo Ferrara
Back in the day before I had to "disability retire" from teaching in a then community college, I was enraptured by the choices and breadth of the Roberts and Jacobs selections. I used the book teaching Honors Composition II (reading, in-class discussion, writing about mostly short stories, and using a "literary link" which I'd help students find to the subjects of their required research papers; ex: the "misfortunes" of the death penalty tied to Susan Glaspell's short story "A Jury of her Peers" and her play--same subject--"Trifles" both in the same edition). As years progressed and book prices skyrocketed, I sought the Roberts & Jacobs' Compact edition and found it a good sturdy paperback with most of the best selections still inside: "Story of an Hour,' "The Shawl," "The Cask of Amontillado," "A Worn Path," "Soldier's Home." Perhaps my gushing over the selections (entire class would put together the reading list of short stories and we'd connect them to poetry or plays also in the Compact Edition (ex: Alice Munro's "A Found Boat" and e.e. cummings' "in Just spring"). What pleased me most at semester's end were two things: we had REALLY USED the book; after all it was a comp class and not strictly a lit class, and two, students kept their books instead of selling them back because they'd found other selections they liked or they wanted to have a reasonably inexpensive lit anthology for their families.
Now the community college is a full-fledged College, and the Compact Edition is used in all Comp II classes. I was glad to have left that treasure behind me.

Enjoyable learning tool
By Natural Cooker
I used this book in my class in college.

I throughly enjoyed the poems, stories etc. The writing information was clear and easily understood. I disagree with the reviewer blaming the book for the lower grade. I got an A.
