Breathtaking!

Very few poets have captured the grandeur and beauty of the spirt of adventure like Robert Service.
In a day and age where refreshing verse and lyrics are hard to come by, a simple look into these pages reveals one of the most monumental works in modern poetry. Nothing quite excites the heart and stirs the soul like the works from Robert Service.
You will find your heart fluttering, your eyes moist and your mind wandering aimless in far away places as Service takes you there on a magic carpet ride of grandeur and adventure.
Inside you'll find a personal favorite, Service's Call of the Wild. If this doesn't move you, I'm not sure that anything will.
Service's poems could very well have been labeled chicken soup for the soul, well before those series of books under the same title.
Nothing short of magical.

Musings on a broken-spined hardcover

My copy is nearing 25 yrs old and shows the wear and tear of living in backpacks, suitcases, briefcases and brown paper bags. This compendium of 6 different books of Service's work will take you from his Gold Rush Days of the Yukon, to his escape to the Bohemian Quarter in Paris to become a 'Serious Poet', and to his volunteering to become an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in the First World War. His ballads are remarkable in how they take you deeply into the the person's life for that brief time as you read. There is the lighthearted comedy he is known for with "The Cremation of Sam McGee", as well as the first person accounts of the unimaginable horrors and uplifting glories of battle in the trenches. Service wrote for the everyday working man, in everything he is utterly approachable and unpretentious. I will confess, as does he, this is "lowbrow stuff", but it is mighty satisfying.

my first introduction to poetry and has been the best experience for poetic appreciation i can imagine. in my formative years i thought that poetry was for longhairs only, but i found that i could really enjoy this lighthearted approach to this medium.unfortunatyely it is the only poetry i really enjoy.i have all his works and reread them year after year. i highly recommend robert w sertvice to everyone with a sense of adventure and/or whimsy start with the cremation of sam mcgee and youll be hooked just like i was thanks, robert for many hours of reading enjoyment.

This is an outstanding bible book for toddlers and preschoolers. The illustrations are endearing and the stories are simple but "on the mark." I especially love the use of the actual bible verse in adult wording following each story. Please bring it back!

I LOVE this book!

The pictures are plentiful and delightful! With only a few lines to read on each page, this book holds the attention of my three small children. Although it is simple enough for a very young child, I enjoy reading it as well. It is a favorite book in our home and we are sure to wear it out before my children are five.
It includes the following parables of Jesus: The Lost Sheep, The Pearl of Great Price, The Two Sons, The Foolish Man and The Wise Man, The Ten Silver Coins, The Eye of the Needle, The Good Samaratin, and The Rich Farmer.

A comprehensive overview and survey of this unique field

Palaeoecology is the science of using the fossil record to reconstruct past ecosystems and environments. Palaeoecology: Ecosystems, Environments And Evolution is a comprehensive overview and survey of this unique field and the rapid advancements that have been made in its theoretical, practical, and technological aspects. Palaeoecology provides both the student and the non-specialist general reader with an informative, accessible text and is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in broader environmental and earth science studies, as well as aspiring paleontologists and geologists.

An excellent (1998) Paleoecology book

An annoying thing about Amazon's listing of this book is that the volume is not a 2004 update to the 1998 version, but is, in fact, the 1998 version. Even so, this book is currently one of the few text books on the market that covers paleoecology as a discipline. There have been a number of recent volumes on topical aspects of paleoecology--such as lovely books like "the Walking Whales", "Pterosaurs", "Sabertooth", "Dogs" and the like, all of which do an excellent job with both the anatomy and the paleoecology of their specific group. Brenchley and Harper do a fine job of surveying the field. Given their biases, the emphasis lies more on Paleozoic examples than on more modern examples. The book is written by geologists so it is light on actual 'ecology' or, for that matter, 'biology' such as someone working in either field would see it. Geologists (and I am one) tend to see the world through a sedimentary lens which cuts out most processes that happen on short time scales (seasons to centuries) and plays up processes of fossilization and macro-scale environmental topics like sedimentary facies. I do not mean this as a criticism, but, the fact is that you will not find a lot of modern ecology in this volume that could inform our understanding of the geologic past. The strengths of the book are its sweeping appreciation of changes in ecosystem structure and function over the past 500 million years. This is a realm that is not typically appreciated by biologists, yet it informs us how the world works in the interaction of physical and chemical planetary evolution with life on the planet. That is a grand vision, indeed.

By the way, my rating is based upon the miss-leading date on the Amazon listing for the volume (it is 1998 NOT 2004), not any lack of appreciation for the contents of the book itself.
